Why Are My Brakes Squeaking?
A squeak or squeal when you brake can be a built-in warning that your pads are worn, or a noise that carmakers have traced to the pads themselves. This guide walks through what owner's manuals and manufacturer service bulletins say about brake noise, and when to have your brakes checked.

The short answer
Some brake pads have wear indicators that make noise when the pads are worn: the 2026 Toyota Corolla owner's manual says that if you hear a squealing or scraping noise from the brake pad wear indicators, have the brake pads checked and replaced as soon as possible, because rotor damage may result if they are not replaced when needed. Squeaks can also come from the pads themselves. Manufacturer service bulletins have traced brake noise to new pads and rotors with uneven friction before they seat, to pad lining and shim materials, and to pads installed in the wrong position. Because you cannot tell these apart by ear, have a technician inspect the brakes.
Squealing can be the pad wear indicator
The 2026 Toyota Corolla Owner's Manual describes this directly: if you hear a squealing or scraping noise (brake pad wear indicators), have the brake pads checked and replaced by your Toyota dealer as soon as possible. It warns that rotor damage may result if the pads are not replaced when needed, and that it is dangerous to drive the vehicle when the wear limits of the brake pads and/or brake discs are exceeded.
That manual lists a brake pad wear limit of 0.06 in. (1.5 mm) for the front pads and 0.08 in. (2.0 mm) for the rear pads on the Corolla. Other vehicles have their own limits and not every pad uses the same kind of indicator, so a technician measures the pads against the specification for your vehicle.
From the 2026 Toyota Corolla Owner's Manual (publication OM12W27U; brake pad wear indicators, page 136; brake pad wear limit, page 388), read November 4, 2026.
What manufacturer service bulletins found
Carmakers publish technical service bulletins (TSBs) for technicians when they find a common condition. These four, filed with NHTSA, deal with brake squeak or squeal. Each applies only to the models listed in it:
Subaru 06-78-20 (2019-20 Ascent)
For a squeaking sound heard when stopping. Subaru says strong pressure on the outside brake pad causes a stick/slip condition, and that when the pads and rotor are both new, the brake friction is uneven, causing a contact vibration at the edge of the pads. The fix was a new front pad with chamfered edges and a special brake grease.
GM 20-NA-020 (2020-22 Silverado and Sierra 2500HD/3500HD)
For brakes that squeal. GM says the condition may be caused by a lining shim material not effectively reducing noise. The correction replaces the front and rear pads with pads that have an improved lining material, with a brake burnish during the test drive to prepare the pads to the rotors.
GM 22-NA-165 (2021-24 Tahoe PPV with the police package)
For loud brake squeal at low speeds. GM says this may be caused by a pursuit rated pad material that may be noisy at low speeds, and offers quieter pads and rotors for vehicles that do not need pursuit rated pads.
Chrysler 05-006-14 (2010-2014 Ram 4500/5500 Cab Chassis)
For a squealing noise during braking from the front and/or rear of the vehicle, on trucks built on or before May 28, 2014. The repair replaces the front and rear brake pads and the rear rotors.
From Subaru service bulletin 06-78-20 (August 18, 2020), GM service bulletins 20-NA-020 (August 2022) and 22-NA-165 (April 2024), and Chrysler service bulletin 05-006-14 (December 15, 2014), as filed with NHTSA, read November 4, 2026.
New pads and rotors can make noise at first
The Subaru bulletin explains why fresh brake parts can be noisy: when the pads and rotor are both new, friction between them is uneven. It notes that seating new pads to new or resurfaced rotors may result in a new sound until the pads are fully seated and pad material has transferred to the rotor, and that this film transfer takes extensive driving and braking, not a short test drive.
Installation matters too. The GM bulletin 20-NA-020 says that if its new pads were already installed and the noise persists, the technician should check the pad orientation, because each pad is marked inboard or outboard and pads in the wrong location can cause brake noise. GM bulletin 22-NA-165 and the Subaru bulletin also specify where grease or paste goes on the pad and caliper contact points, and where it must not go.
From Subaru service bulletin 06-78-20 and GM service bulletins 20-NA-020 and 22-NA-165, read November 4, 2026. These bulletins are written for trained technicians.
Rust on the rotors after washing or sitting
The 2026 Ram 1500 Owner's Manual says that if you intend to park or store your vehicle for an extended period after cleaning the wheels with wheel cleaner, you should drive it and apply the brakes to remove the water droplets from the brake components. The manual says this removes the red rust on the brake rotors and prevents vehicle vibration when braking. The manual's note is about vibration rather than noise.
From the 2026 Ram 1500 Owner's Manual (publication 104308_26_DT, edition E2; wheel and wheel trim care, page 358), read November 4, 2026.
How often brakes should be checked
Owner's manuals build brake checks into routine service. The 2026 Ram 1500 Owner's Manual says to check the brake pads, rotors, brake operation and fluid level once a month or before a long trip, and its maintenance plan includes inspecting the brake pads, shoes, rotors, drums and hoses at every oil change interval shown by the oil change indicator system.
If your brakes squeak, squeal or scrape between those visits, have them looked at rather than waiting for the next oil change, especially if the noise is new or getting louder.

Squeaky brakes FAQ
Why do my brakes squeak when I stop?
Common causes documented by carmakers include pad wear indicators signaling worn pads, new pads and rotors that have not seated yet, and pad lining or shim materials that do not damp noise well. Only an inspection can tell which one you have.
Is it safe to drive with squeaking brakes?
Have them checked soon. The 2026 Toyota Corolla owner's manual says a squealing or scraping noise from the brake pad wear indicators means the pads should be checked and replaced as soon as possible, that rotor damage may result if they are not, and that it is dangerous to drive when the pad or disc wear limits are exceeded.
Is it normal for new brakes to squeak?
It can happen. A Subaru service bulletin says new pads and rotors have uneven friction at first, and that seating new pads to new or resurfaced rotors may result in a new sound until the pads are fully seated, which takes extensive driving and braking.
Can a brake job cause squeaking?
Yes, if parts are not installed as specified. A GM service bulletin says pads have inboard and outboard designations and pads in the wrong location can cause brake noise. GM bulletin 22-NA-165 and a Subaru bulletin also specify exactly where grease or paste may and may not be applied.
How often should brakes be inspected?
Follow your owner's manual. The 2026 Ram 1500 manual, for example, says to check the pads, rotors, brake operation and fluid level once a month or before a long trip, and to inspect the pads, shoes, rotors, drums and hoses at every oil change.
What are your service hours?
