How Often Should You Rotate Your Tires?

Front and rear tires wear at different rates, and rotating them evens that out. How often to do it is set by your vehicle's maintenance schedule, and many schedules tie it to the oil change. This guide uses three owner's manuals as worked examples, the 2026 Jeep Wrangler Owner's Manual, the 2026 Ram 1500 Owner's Manual and the 2026 Dodge Durango Owner's Manual; always follow the schedule in your own manual.

The short answer

Follow the maintenance schedule in your owner's manual. In the 2026 Jeep Wrangler Owner's Manual, the maintenance plan for its 2.0L gas, hybrid and 3.6L gas models says to rotate the tires at every oil change interval, as indicated by the oil change indicator system, and that oil change intervals should never exceed 10,000 miles, 12 months or 350 hours of engine run time, whichever comes first. The Wrangler, Ram 1500 and Durango manuals all say to rotate at the first sign of irregular wear, even if it occurs before the oil indicator turns on. The Ram 1500 manual adds that more frequent rotation is permissible.

Why tires need rotating

The tires on the front and rear of a vehicle operate at different loads and perform different steering, handling and braking functions, so they wear at unequal rates. The 2026 Jeep Wrangler Owner's Manual says these effects can be reduced by timely rotation, and that rotation will increase tread life, help to maintain mud, snow and wet traction levels, and contribute to a smooth, quiet ride. It notes the benefits are especially worthwhile with aggressive tread designs such as On/Off Road type tires; the 2026 Ram 1500 Owner's Manual says the same of all season type tires.

How often to rotate tires: three maintenance plans

Each manual points to its maintenance plan for the rotation interval. Here is what each plan says:

ManualTire rotation in the maintenance plan
2026 Jeep Wrangler (2.0L gas, hybrid and 3.6L gas plan)At every oil change interval as indicated by the oil change indicator system: rotate the tires. Rotate at the first sign of irregular wear, even if it occurs before the oil indicator system turns on. The manual says oil change intervals should never exceed 10,000 miles (16,000 km), 12 months or 350 hours of engine run time, whichever comes first.
2026 Ram 1500At every oil change interval as indicated by the oil change indicator system: rotate the tires at the first sign of irregular wear, even if it occurs before the oil indicator system turns on. The plan's Additional Inspections list also marks Rotate tires at every step from 20,000 to 150,000 miles (years 2 to 15), whichever comes first. More frequent rotation is permissible if desired.
2026 Dodge DurangoAt every oil change interval as indicated by the oil change indicator system: rotate the tires at the first sign of irregular wear, even if it occurs before the oil indicator system turns on.

From the 2026 Jeep Wrangler Owner's Manual (Scheduled Servicing; Maintenance Plan, page 275), the 2026 Ram 1500 Owner's Manual (Maintenance Plan, pages 306 and 307; Tire Rotation Recommendations, page 360) and the 2026 Dodge Durango Owner's Manual (Maintenance Plan, page 218), read October 29, 2026.

The 350 hours of engine run or idle time is, per the Wrangler manual, generally only a concern for fleet customers. Other makes and models set their own intervals, so check the maintenance schedule in your manual.

The rotation pattern: rearward cross

All three manuals suggest the "rearward cross" method. In the diagram in the 2026 Ram 1500 Owner's Manual, the rear tires move straight forward to the front on the same side, and the front tires cross to the opposite sides at the rear.

The Ram 1500 manual says this rotation pattern does not apply to some directional tires that must not be reversed. If your tires are directional, follow the tire maker's guidance. The Durango manual notes that its Tire Pressure Monitor System automatically locates the pressure values shown in the correct vehicle position after a rotation.

From the 2026 Ram 1500 Owner's Manual (Tire Rotation Recommendations and diagram, page 360), the 2026 Jeep Wrangler Owner's Manual (page 336) and the 2026 Dodge Durango Owner's Manual (Tire Rotation Recommendations, page 267), read October 29, 2026.

When to rotate early

All three plans say to rotate at the first sign of irregular wear, even if it comes before the oil change indicator turns on. The Wrangler manual's monthly checklist (once a month or before a long trip) includes checking tire inflation pressures and looking for unusual wear or damage, rotating at the first sign of irregular wear.

The manuals also say the reasons for any rapid or unusual wear should be corrected before rotation is performed, so a tire that is wearing oddly is a reason to have the car looked at, not only rotated.

From the 2026 Jeep Wrangler Owner's Manual (Once A Month Or Before A Long Trip; Maintenance Plan, page 275; Tire Rotation Recommendations, page 336), the 2026 Ram 1500 Owner's Manual (page 360) and the 2026 Dodge Durango Owner's Manual (page 267), read October 29, 2026.

Four-wheel drive and all-wheel drive

The 2026 Jeep Wrangler Owner's Manual cautions that proper operation of four-wheel drive vehicles depends on tires of equal size, type and circumference on each wheel, that any difference in tire size can cause damage to the transfer case, and that the tire rotation schedule should be followed to balance tire wear. If you drive a 4WD or AWD vehicle, check its manual for any similar caution.

Tire rotation FAQ

How often should you rotate your tires?

Follow your owner's manual. The 2026 Jeep Wrangler maintenance plan for its 2.0L gas, hybrid and 3.6L gas models says to rotate the tires at every oil change interval, and says oil change intervals should never exceed 10,000 miles or 12 months.

Should tires be rotated at every oil change?

Many maintenance plans tie the two together. In the 2026 Wrangler plan, rotating the tires is listed at every oil change interval; the 2026 Ram 1500 and Durango plans list rotating at the first sign of irregular wear under that same interval.

Can you rotate tires too often?

The 2026 Ram 1500 manual says more frequent rotation is permissible if desired.

What is the rearward cross rotation pattern?

In the 2026 Ram 1500 manual's diagram, the rear tires move straight forward to the front on the same side, and the front tires cross to the opposite sides at the rear.

Can directional tires be rotated in a cross pattern?

The 2026 Ram 1500 manual says the rearward cross pattern does not apply to some directional tires that must not be reversed. Follow the tire maker's guidance for directional tires.

Why does tire rotation matter on 4WD and AWD vehicles?

The 2026 Wrangler manual says four-wheel drive operation depends on tires of equal size, type and circumference, that a difference in tire size can damage the transfer case, and that the rotation schedule should be followed to balance tire wear.
