Car Maintenance Schedule Basics
Every car's maintenance schedule comes from its manufacturer, in the owner's manual or a separate maintenance guide. Schedules differ by brand and model, but they share the same building blocks: a mileage or time interval, monthly checks, extra care for hard driving, and records. Here is how to read and follow the schedule for the used car you drive.

The short answer
Follow the schedule in your car's owner's manual or maintenance guide, by miles or months, whichever comes first. Check the oil level and other basics once a month, follow your manual's extra services for severe driving (such as dusty roads or very short trips) when they apply to you, and keep records of every service. Makers differ: Toyota's 2026 Corolla Hybrid guide calls for maintenance every 5,000 miles or six months, while the 2026 Ram 1500 uses an oil change indicator with a hard limit of 10,000 miles or 12 months.
Where to find your car's maintenance schedule
The schedule for your car is in its owner's manual or in a separate warranty and maintenance booklet from the manufacturer, usually kept in the glove box. If a used car came without one, the manufacturer's owner website is the place to look; Toyota, for example, offers owner's manuals and maintenance guides through its owners site.
Schedules are written for the exact vehicle, so use the one for your make, model, year and engine. Two manufacturers' 2026 schedules, compared below, show how much they can differ.
Two real schedules, side by side
These are examples only. Your own manual or maintenance guide has the schedule for your car.
| Item | 2026 Toyota Corolla Hybrid (maintenance guide) | 2026 Ram 1500 (owner's manual) |
|---|---|---|
| Basic interval | Scheduled maintenance every 5,000 miles or six months, whichever comes first. | Service when the oil change indicator shows Oil Change Required, within the next 500 miles. |
| Oil and filter | Replaced every 10,000 miles in the standard chart; every 5,000 miles or six months under special operating conditions, such as repeated trips of less than five miles in below-freezing temperatures. | Changed at every oil change interval shown by the indicator; never more than 10,000 miles, 12 months or 350 hours of engine run time, whichever comes first. |
| Tires | Rotate tires at every 5,000-mile interval. | Rotate at the first sign of irregular wear, even before the oil indicator comes on. |
| Inspections | All fluid levels, brake linings and pads, wiper blades and more are inspected at every interval. | Battery, brakes, cooling system, exhaust and CV/universal joints are inspected at every oil change. |
| Hard driving | Extra services listed under special operating conditions, only if most of your driving is done that way. | More frequent maintenance may be needed in severe conditions, such as dusty areas and very short trip driving. |

Monthly checks between services
Scheduled services are not the whole job. Both examples call for ongoing checks between visits. Toyota's guide says it is especially important to check the engine oil level once a month, and the 2026 Ram 1500 Owner's Manual lists these checks once a month or before a long trip:
- Engine oil level
- Interior and exterior lights
- 12-volt battery terminals, cables and connections
- Brake pads, rotors, brake operation and fluid level
- Steering, suspension, chassis components and axle boots
- Wipers, washer operation, wiper blades and washer reservoir
- Coolant reservoir
Your own manual's maintenance and care section lists the checks for your car.
Normal or severe: which schedule applies?
Severe or special conditions
Manufacturers list extra or more frequent services for demanding use. Ram names dusty areas and very short trip driving as examples of severe conditions.
Only if most driving is severe
Toyota's guide says to perform the additional special-condition services only if the majority of your driving is done under those conditions, not if you only occasionally drive that way.
Indicator-based oil changes
On cars with an oil change indicator, driving style changes the interval. Ram lists frequent short trips, trailer towing and extremely hot or cold temperatures as conditions that affect when the Oil Change Required message appears.
Low-mileage drivers
Time counts too. Toyota's guide says that if you have driven fewer than 5,000 miles by six months, get maintenance at six months rather than waiting for the miles.

Keep records, and ask for them on a used car
Toyota's guide recommends keeping detailed maintenance records, including the date, the mileage and a description of the service or parts installed, and giving them to the new owner if you sell the car. The same records are worth asking for when you buy a used car: they show whether the schedule was followed.
Toyota's guide also notes that maintenance and repairs may be done by you or any service provider you choose, and that Toyota will not deny a warranty claim solely because a non-Toyota shop did the work; damage caused by improper or missing maintenance is not covered. Check your own warranty booklet for your car's terms.

Maintenance that helps fuel economy
Tire pressure
Keeping tires at the recommended pressure improves gas mileage by 0.6% on average, and up to 3% in some cases. The pressure is on a sticker in the driver's door jamb or glove box and in the owner's manual; do not use the maximum pressure on the sidewall.
The right oil grade
Using the manufacturer's recommended grade of motor oil can improve gas mileage by 1% to 2%.
Air filter
On modern fuel-injected, computer-controlled engines, replacing a clogged air filter does not improve fuel economy, but it can improve acceleration.
Check engine light
Have the car inspected when the check engine light comes on; the problem could reduce fuel economy and lead to costly repairs later. See our used car recall guide for another check worth doing.

Car maintenance schedule FAQ
How often should I service my car?
Follow the schedule in your owner's manual or maintenance guide, by miles or months, whichever comes first. Intervals vary: Toyota's 2026 Corolla Hybrid guide says every 5,000 miles or six months, while the 2026 Ram 1500 follows its oil change indicator.
Where do I find the maintenance schedule for a used car?
In the owner's manual or the manufacturer's warranty and maintenance booklet. If the car did not come with one, check the manufacturer's owner website.
Do I need the severe maintenance schedule?
Follow your manual's rule. Toyota's guide, for example, says to perform the special-condition services only if most of your driving is done under those conditions, such as dirt or dusty roads, not if you only drive that way occasionally.
What should I check every month?
At least the engine oil level. The 2026 Ram 1500 Owner's Manual adds lights, battery connections, brakes, steering and suspension, wipers and washer fluid, and the coolant reservoir.
Why keep maintenance records?
They show the car was maintained on schedule, which matters for warranty coverage and when you sell. Toyota's guide recommends recording the date, mileage and work done, and passing the records to the next owner.
Can Elgin Auto Sales do my scheduled maintenance?
