How Long Do Brakes Last?

Brake pads and rotors wear with use, so there is no single mileage that fits every car. What an owner's manual gives you instead is an inspection schedule and a list of things that wear brakes faster. This guide uses the 2026 Ram 1500 Owner's Manual as a worked example; check your own manual and maintenance schedule.

The short answer

How long brakes last depends on how, where and what you drive, so the 2026 Ram 1500 Owner's Manual schedules brake inspections rather than a fixed replacement mileage. Its Maintenance Plan has the brake pads, shoes, rotors, drums and hoses inspected at every oil change interval, and the brake pads inspected and replaced as necessary every 20,000 miles or 2 years, whichever comes first. Riding the brake pedal and towing a heavy trailer without its own brakes wear the linings faster. If the red Brake System Warning Light stays on or comes on while driving, the manual says immediate service is required.

When a maintenance plan inspects the brakes

Here is what the 2026 Ram 1500 Owner's Manual Maintenance Plan lists for the brakes:

WhenBrake items in the 2026 Ram 1500 Maintenance Plan
At every oil change interval, as indicated by the oil change indicator systemInspect the brake pads, shoes, rotors, drums and hoses.
At 20,000, 40,000, 60,000, 80,000, 100,000, 120,000 and 140,000 miles (or 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12 and 14 years), whichever comes firstInspect the brake pads, replace as necessary. Adjust the parking brake as necessary.

From the 2026 Ram 1500 Owner's Manual (Maintenance Plan, pages 306 and 307), read October 29, 2026.

The same manual says more frequent maintenance may be needed in severe conditions, such as dusty areas and very short trip driving. Other makes and models have their own schedules; look for the brake items in yours.

What makes brakes wear out faster

Riding the brakes. The 2026 Ram 1500 Owner's Manual warns that driving with your foot resting or riding on the brake pedal can result in abnormally high brake temperatures, excessive lining wear and possible brake damage, and that you would not have your full braking capacity in an emergency.

Towing without trailer brakes. The same manual says that if a trailer weighs more than 1,000 lb (453 kg) loaded, it should have its own brakes of adequate capacity; otherwise it could lead to accelerated brake lining wear, higher brake pedal effort and longer stopping distances.

How you use the vehicle. Because brake life depends on use, two identical cars can need pads at very different mileages. That is why the inspections above matter more than any single number.

From the 2026 Ram 1500 Owner's Manual (Brake System, page 325; Towing Requirements — Trailer Brakes, page 223), read October 29, 2026. The last paragraph is our summary.

Warning signs that need attention

The red Brake System Warning Light turns on briefly when the vehicle is switched on. Per the 2026 Ram 1500 Owner's Manual, if it remains on or comes on while driving, the brake system is not functioning properly and immediate service is required. If it does not come on at start-up, have the light repaired as soon as possible.

The ABS Warning Light is separate. If it stays on, the manual says the brake system should be serviced as soon as possible to restore the benefits of anti-lock brakes; the conventional brakes keep working, as long as the Brake System Warning Light is not also on.

From the 2026 Ram 1500 Owner's Manual (Brake System Warning Light; Anti-Lock Brake System, page 243), read October 29, 2026. Warning lights and their meanings differ by vehicle; check your manual.

Brake fluid and pad wear

With disc brakes, the 2026 Ram 1500 Owner's Manual says the brake fluid level can be expected to fall as the brake pads wear, and the level should be checked when pads are replaced. It should also be checked whenever the vehicle is serviced, or immediately if the Brake System Warning Light is on. If the fluid is abnormally low, the manual says to check the system for leaks.

Use only the manufacturer's recommended brake fluid, from a new or tightly closed container; the manual warns that the wrong type can severely damage the brake system.

From the 2026 Ram 1500 Owner's Manual (Fluid Level Check — Brake Master Cylinder, page 325), read October 29, 2026.

How long do brakes last FAQ

How many miles do brake pads last?

There is no single number, because brake life depends on how and where you drive. The 2026 Ram 1500 manual, for example, has the pads inspected and replaced as necessary every 20,000 miles or 2 years rather than at a fixed replacement mileage.

How often should brakes be inspected?

In the 2026 Ram 1500 Maintenance Plan, the brake pads, shoes, rotors, drums and hoses are inspected at every oil change interval, with a brake pad inspection every 20,000 miles or 2 years. Check your own vehicle's schedule.

What wears brakes out faster?

The 2026 Ram 1500 manual names riding the brake pedal, which causes excessive lining wear, and towing a trailer over 1,000 lb loaded without its own brakes, which leads to accelerated brake lining wear.

Do rotors need replacing with pads?

Not necessarily. The 2026 Ram 1500 Maintenance Plan lists rotors among the parts inspected at every oil change interval; whether they need replacing depends on that inspection.

Is it safe to drive with the brake warning light on?

The 2026 Ram 1500 manual says that if the red Brake System Warning Light stays on or comes on while driving, the brake system is not functioning properly and immediate service is required.

Why is my brake fluid low?

With disc brakes, the 2026 Ram 1500 manual says the fluid level can be expected to fall as the pads wear. If it is abnormally low, it says to check the system for leaks.
