ABS Light On: What It Means
The ABS light is the yellow anti-lock brake warning on your dashboard. Seeing it for a few seconds at startup is normal; seeing it stay on is not. This guide explains what the light means, whether your brakes still work, the combination of lights that calls for immediate repair, and what normal ABS operation feels like.

The short answer
If the ABS light stays on or comes on while driving, the anti-lock part of the brake system is not working. Your regular brakes should still work normally, but the wheels can lock in a hard stop, so have the brakes serviced as soon as possible. If the red brake warning light is on too, part of the brake system may have failed: it will take longer to stop, and the vehicle needs immediate repair.
What the ABS light means
The anti-lock brake system (ABS) keeps the wheels from locking during hard braking so you can keep steering control. The ABS warning light monitors that system. Using Ram's 2026 owner's manual as an example:
- The yellow ABS light turns on when the vehicle is placed in ON/RUN and may stay on for as long as four seconds. That is a normal bulb and system check.
- If the ABS light stays on, or comes on while driving, the anti-lock portion of the brake system is not functioning and service is required.
- If the ABS light does not come on at all when you start the vehicle, have the light repaired or the brake system inspected.
- The ABS also runs a self-check each time the vehicle is started and driven. You may hear a slight clicking sound and some motor noise during that check.

Is it safe to drive with the ABS light on?
With only the yellow ABS light on, Ram says the conventional brake system will continue to operate normally. What you lose is the anti-lock function, which helps prevent wheel lock and keeps the vehicle more controllable in a hard or slippery stop.
Ram says the brake system should be serviced as soon as possible to restore the benefits of anti-lock brakes. Until then, we suggest leaving extra following distance, braking early and smoothly, and taking extra care on ice, snow, gravel and other loose or slippery surfaces.

When the ABS light comes on with the red brake light
Both lights on
Vehicles with ABS also have Electronic Brake Force Distribution (EBD). Ram says that if EBD fails, the red brake warning light turns on along with the ABS light, and immediate repair is required.
Red brake light alone
It may mean the parking brake is applied, the brake fluid level is low, or there is a problem with the anti-lock brake system reservoir. If it stays on with the parking brake released and the fluid at the full mark, it indicates a possible brake hydraulic malfunction.
Do not keep driving
Ram warns that driving with the red brake light on is dangerous: part of the brake system may have failed, and it will take longer to stop. Have the vehicle checked immediately.

What normal ABS operation feels like
Some drivers feel the ABS work and assume something broke. Ram lists these as normal characteristics when the ABS activates:
- ABS motor noise or clicking sounds, which you may hear for a short time after the stop.
- Brake pedal pulsations.
Ram adds that ice, snow, gravel, bumps, railroad tracks, loose debris or panic stops may increase the likelihood of ABS activation. In an emergency stop, press firmly on the brake pedal. Ram warns that pumping anti-lock brakes diminishes their effectiveness, makes the stopping distance longer and may lead to a collision.

What can affect the ABS
Ram's manual notes a few things that can degrade anti-lock braking:
- Tires: the ABS is designed to work with the original equipment tires, and modification may result in degraded ABS performance.
- Aftermarket radio equipment: improperly installed or high-output radio transmitting equipment can cause interference and possible loss of anti-lock braking. Ram says such equipment should be installed by qualified professionals.
- Limits of the system: the ABS cannot overcome the laws of physics or prevent collisions caused by excessive speed in turns, following too closely or hydroplaning.
From the 2026 Ram 1500 Owner's Manual (Anti-Lock Brake System), read November 3, 2026. The warning light itself does not tell you which part has failed; an inspection is needed to find the cause.

ABS light FAQ
What does it mean when the ABS light comes on?
If it stays on or comes on while driving, the anti-lock portion of the brake system is not functioning and needs service. A few seconds at startup is a normal check.
Can I drive with the ABS light on?
With only the ABS light on, Ram says the conventional brakes continue to operate normally, but you lose anti-lock protection. Have the brakes serviced as soon as possible and drive with extra care.
What if the ABS light and brake light are both on?
Ram says an Electronic Brake Force Distribution failure turns on both lights, and immediate repair is required. Driving with the red brake light on is dangerous because part of the brake system may have failed.
Do my brakes still work if the ABS light is on?
According to Ram, yes: the conventional brake system continues to operate normally if only the ABS light is on. The anti-lock function does not.
Is a pulsing brake pedal during a hard stop a problem?
Not during ABS activation. Ram lists brake pedal pulsations and clicking or motor noise as normal characteristics when the ABS activates.
Can non-original tires affect the ABS?
Ram says the ABS is designed to work with the original equipment tires and that modification may result in degraded ABS performance. If the ABS light stays on, have the system inspected.
