Transmission Temperature Light: What It Means and What to Do
The transmission temperature warning light is one to take seriously. In the owner's manual example used here, the 2026 Ram 1500, it warns of a high transmission fluid temperature, which may occur with strenuous usage such as trailer towing. Here is what the manual says to do, what can happen if you keep driving, and how to help prevent it.

The short answer
In the manual example, the Transmission Temperature Warning Light (If Equipped) illuminates to warn of a high transmission fluid temperature. If it turns on, stop the vehicle and run the engine at idle or slightly faster, with the transmission in PARK or NEUTRAL, until the light turns off. Once the light turns off, you may continue to drive normally.
What the transmission temperature light means
In the manual example, the Transmission Temperature Warning Light (If Equipped) illuminates to warn of a high transmission fluid temperature. This may occur with strenuous usage such as trailer towing. The symbol glossary lists it with the red warning lights.
The glossary notes that warning and indicator lights are different based upon equipment options and current vehicle status, and some telltales are optional and may not appear. Check your own owner's manual for how your vehicle shows it.

What to do when the light comes on
The manual example gives these steps:
- Stop the vehicle. (We suggest pulling over somewhere safe first.)
- Run the engine at idle or slightly faster, with the transmission in PARK or NEUTRAL.
- Wait until the light turns off.
- Once the light turns off, you may continue to drive normally.
From the 2026 Ram 1500 Owner's Manual (pages 142 and 143), read November 4, 2026. The note about pulling over safely is ours.
Why you should not keep driving with it on
The manual example carries a warning and a caution:
Fire risk
If you continue operating the vehicle when the Transmission Temperature Warning Light is illuminated, you could cause the fluid to boil over, come in contact with hot engine or exhaust components and cause a fire.
Transmission damage
Continuous driving with the Transmission Temperature Warning Light illuminated will eventually cause severe transmission damage or transmission failure.
From the 2026 Ram 1500 Owner's Manual (page 143), read November 4, 2026.
Helping prevent transmission overheating
Other parts of the same manual touch on transmission heat:
Tow/Haul mode
Select TOW/HAUL mode when driving in conditions such as driving in hilly areas, towing a trailer or carrying a heavy load. The manual says this mode will improve performance and reduce the potential for transmission overheating or failure due to excessive shifting.
Watch the gauge when towing
On trucks equipped with Trailer Tow pages, the gauges that can be shown include Transmission Temperature. If any gauge reaches a critical condition, the fill bar, numerical readout and icon will be displayed in bright red.
Stuck in snow or mud
When rocking a stuck vehicle, racing the engine or spinning the wheels may lead to transmission overheating and failure. Allow the engine to idle with the transmission in NEUTRAL for at least one minute after every five rocking-motion cycles.
From the 2026 Ram 1500 Owner's Manual (Trailer Tow gauges, page 167; When To Use Tow/Haul Mode, page 197; freeing a stuck vehicle, page 300), read November 4, 2026.
If the light keeps coming back
The manual example says you may continue to drive normally once the light turns off. If it comes back often, comes on without towing or other heavy use, or does not go out after idling, we suggest having the transmission checked. Tell us when it came on and what you were doing at the time. For a related check, see our guide to checking transmission fluid.
The service suggestion is ours. The light description is from the 2026 Ram 1500 Owner's Manual (pages 142 and 143), read November 4, 2026.
