Why Is My Car Overheating?

A temperature gauge creeping toward HOT, a warning light or steam from under the hood means the cooling system is not getting rid of the engine's heat. This guide covers the warning signs, what to do right away, what never to do, and the cooling-system problems a technician will look for.

The short answer

A car can overheat when the cooling system cannot carry heat away: coolant is low or leaking, the radiator or A/C condenser is blocked with debris, a hose or the pressure cap is failing, or a part such as the thermostat or radiator fan is not doing its job. If the gauge reaches HOT, pull over when it is safe, turn off the A/C and let the engine idle; if it stays on HOT, turn the engine off and call for service. Never open the cooling system while it is hot.

Warning signs your engine is overheating

Ram's 2026 owner's manual lists the first four of these potential signs of overheating; its warning-light section adds the fifth:

  • The temperature gauge is at HOT (H).
  • A strong smell of coolant.
  • White smoke coming from the engine or exhaust.
  • Bubbles in the coolant in the coolant bottle.
  • The engine coolant temperature warning light comes on with a chime. If the temperature reaches the upper limit, a continuous chime sounds.

What to do when the temperature gauge climbs

If the gauge is moving toward HOT but has not reached it, Ram's manual suggests these steps to reduce the potential for overheating:

  • On the highway, slow down.
  • In city traffic, while stopped, shift into NEUTRAL, but do not raise the engine idle speed while holding the vehicle with the brakes.
  • Turn the air conditioning off. The A/C adds heat to the engine cooling system.
  • Turn the temperature control to maximum heat, the mode to floor and the blower to high. The heater core then acts as a supplement to the radiator.

If the gauge reads HOT, pull over and stop. Idle the vehicle with the A/C off until the pointer drops back into the normal range. If it stays on HOT and you hear continuous chimes, turn the engine off immediately and call for service. Ram warns that driving with a hot cooling system could damage the vehicle.

What not to do

Hot coolant and steam can cause serious burns. The manual is clear on these points:

  • Do not open the hood if you see or hear steam coming from under it; wait until the radiator has had time to cool.
  • Never open the cooling system pressure cap when the radiator or coolant bottle is hot, and do not loosen or remove it to cool an overheated engine. Heat builds pressure in the system.
  • Never add coolant when the engine is overheated.
  • Keep hands, tools, clothing and jewelry away from the radiator cooling fan when the hood is raised. It is temperature controlled and can start at any time, whether the engine is running or not.

Common causes of overheating

These are the cooling-system checks Ram's manual describes. Each one points to a way the system can lose its ability to shed heat.

Low coolant or a leak

Ram says to inspect the entire system for leaks, and if frequent coolant additions are needed, the cooling system should be pressure tested for leaks. Check under the car after it has been parked overnight for coolant drips.

Blocked radiator or condenser

Ram says to check the front of the A/C condenser or radiator for bugs, leaves and other debris, clean it gently with a garden hose if dirty, and keep the front of the radiator and condenser clean.

Worn hoses

Ram has owners check cooling-system hoses for brittle rubber, cracking, tears, cuts and loose connections at the coolant recovery bottle and radiator.

Pressure cap

The cap must be fully tightened to prevent coolant loss and let coolant return from the expansion bottle, and it should be cleaned if foreign material builds up on its sealing surfaces. Use only the cap specified for your vehicle.

Wrong or mixed coolant

Ram warns that mixing coolant types can damage the cooling system, and that water alone, alcohol-based coolant or add-on rust inhibitors should not be used. Dirty or rusty coolant should be drained, flushed and refilled.

Thermostat or fan

Ram notes the thermostat opens to let hot coolant into the radiator, and the radiator fan is temperature controlled and starts automatically. It says to install only the correct type of thermostat if it is ever replaced; other designs may result in unsatisfactory engine cooling performance.

From the 2026 Ram 1500 Owner's Manual (Cooling System; Periodic Safety Checks), read November 3, 2026. Only an inspection can confirm the cause on your car.

When steam is normal

Not every wisp of vapor means trouble. Ram's manual notes that when you stop after a few miles of driving, you may see vapor coming from the front of the engine compartment. That is normally moisture from rain, snow or high humidity on the radiator being vaporized when the thermostat opens and lets hot coolant into the radiator. If there is no sign of radiator or hose leaks, the vehicle may be safely driven and the vapor will soon go away.

A temperature gauge at HOT, a coolant smell, bubbling in the coolant bottle or continuous steam is different and should be checked.

Help prevent overheating

Simple checks from the owner's manual:

  • Check the coolant level in the coolant bottle with the engine cold. It should be between the MIN and MAX marks. For its 3.6L engine, Ram says checking once a month is enough as long as the engine temperature is normal. Do not overfill.
  • Have the coolant's freeze protection checked every 12 months, before freezing weather.
  • Clear bugs and leaves from the front of the radiator and A/C condenser.
  • Look over the hoses for brittle rubber, cracks, tears and cuts, and watch for leaks under the car.
  • Use only the coolant type your owner's manual specifies. Some vehicles need special tools to add coolant properly, so if yours is low and you are unsure, have it serviced.
  • Follow the coolant replacement interval in your manual. For the 2026 Ram 1500 it is 10 years or 150,000 miles, whichever comes first.

Car overheating FAQ

Why is my car overheating?

Often because the cooling system cannot carry heat away: low coolant or a leak, a radiator or A/C condenser blocked with debris, worn hoses, a faulty pressure cap, the wrong or mixed coolant, or a thermostat or cooling fan problem.

What should I do if my car starts overheating?

Slow down, turn off the A/C, and if needed turn the heater to maximum heat with the blower on high. If the gauge reads HOT, pull over, stop, and let the engine idle with the A/C off until it drops back to normal. If it stays on HOT, turn the engine off and call for service.

Can I drive with an overheating engine?

It is not a good idea. Ram warns that driving with a hot cooling system could damage the vehicle, and says to turn the engine off and call for service if the gauge stays on HOT.

Can I open the radiator cap to cool the engine?

No. Never open the cooling system pressure cap while the radiator or coolant bottle is hot. Heat builds pressure, and hot coolant or steam can cause serious burns.

Can I add water instead of coolant?

Ram's manual says not to use water alone. Use the coolant type your owner's manual specifies, mixed as directed, and never add coolant to an overheated engine.

Why is there steam from my engine after rain?

Moisture from rain, snow or humidity on the radiator can be vaporized when the thermostat opens. If there are no leaks, Ram says the vehicle may be safely driven and the vapor will go away.
