How to Check Transmission Fluid
Whether you can check your own automatic transmission fluid depends on the transmission. Some have a dipstick; many newer ones are sealed and have none. This guide uses two owner's manuals as worked examples, the 2022 Ram 2500/3500 Owner's Manual (6-speed and 8-speed automatics) and the 2026 Ram 1500 Owner's Manual; always follow your own vehicle's manual, because the procedure, the temperature and the fluid differ by transmission.

The short answer
First find out whether your transmission has a dipstick. On a sealed transmission, such as the automatic transmission in the 2026 Ram 1500 Owner's Manual, routine fluid level checks are not required, there is no dipstick, and an authorized dealer checks the level with special service tools. Where there is a dipstick, as on the 6-speed automatic in the 2022 Ram 2500/3500 Owner's Manual, you check it warm: park on level ground, leave the engine idling, apply the parking brake, move the selector through each gear and back to PARK, then pull, wipe, reinsert and read the dipstick. At normal operating temperature the level should be between the HOT reference holes. Do not overfill, and use only the specified fluid.
First: does your transmission have a dipstick?
Not every automatic transmission can be checked at home. The 2026 Ram 1500 Owner's Manual says the fluid level of its transmission is preset at the factory and does not require adjustment under normal operating conditions; routine fluid level checks are not required, so the transmission has no dipstick. The 2022 Ram 2500/3500 Owner's Manual says the same about its 8-speed automatic.
The same 2022 Ram 2500/3500 manual gives a dipstick procedure for its 6-speed automatic. The engine oil dipstick is a different part, so check your owner's manual to see which kind of transmission you have before you start.
From the 2026 Ram 1500 Owner's Manual (Automatic Transmission: Fluid Level Check, page 326) and the 2022 Ram 2500/3500 Owner's Manual (Fluid Level Check — 8-Speed Transmission; Fluid Level Check — 6-Speed Transmission), read October 29, 2026.
How to check transmission fluid with a dipstick, step by step
These are the steps the 2022 Ram 2500/3500 Owner's Manual gives for its 6-speed automatic. It says the level is best checked at normal operating temperature, 158-176°F (70-80°C), which normally takes at least 15 miles (25 km) of driving; that truck shows the transmission temperature on the instrument cluster display.
- Drive as needed to bring the transmission to normal operating temperature.
- Park the vehicle on level ground.
- Run the engine at normal idle speed for at least 60 seconds, and leave it running for the rest of the check.
- Fully apply the parking brake and press the brake pedal.
- Move the gear selector momentarily into each gear position, allowing time for the transmission to fully engage in each, ending in PARK.
- Unlock the dipstick cap and remove the dipstick, wipe it clean and reinsert it until it is seated.
- Remove it again and note the fluid level on both sides.
- Reinsert the dipstick until it is fully seated and lock it down, then check for leaks and release the parking brake.

Reading the dipstick and adding fluid
For that 6-speed, the manual explains how to read the dipstick and what to do if the level is low:
| Topic | What the 2022 Ram 2500/3500 manual says |
|---|---|
| A valid reading | The reading is only valid if there is a solid coating of oil on both sides of the dipstick. The holes in the dipstick will be full of fluid if the level is at or above the hole. |
| The right level | Between the HOT (upper) reference holes at normal operating temperature. |
| Checking it cold | Between the two COLD (lower) holes with the fluid at 60-70°F (16-21°C), as a rough reference only; recheck once the transmission reaches operating temperature. Below 50°F (10°C) the fluid may not register, so do not add fluid until it is warm; idle the engine in PARK to warm it. |
| If it is low | Add the specified fluid through the dipstick tube to bring it to the proper level. Do not overfill. |
| After adding | Wait at least two minutes for the fluid to drain into the transmission before rechecking. |
| Dipstick length | The level can only be checked with the 44-inch dipstick blade that has level indicator holes; with the 15-inch dipstick, a service dipstick is required. |

If your transmission has no dipstick
For a sealed transmission, the 2026 Ram 1500 Owner's Manual says an authorized dealer can check the fluid level using special service tools. If you notice fluid leakage or transmission malfunction, it says to have the transmission fluid level checked immediately, because operating the vehicle with an improper fluid level can cause severe transmission damage.
It also says that under normal operating conditions the factory-fill fluid provides satisfactory lubrication for the life of the vehicle and routine fluid and filter changes are not required; the fluid and filter should be changed if the fluid becomes contaminated (with water, for example) or the transmission is disassembled. Other makes and models set their own intervals, so check your maintenance schedule.
From the 2026 Ram 1500 Owner's Manual (Automatic Transmission: Fluid Level Check; Fluid And Filter Changes, page 326), read October 29, 2026.
Use the right fluid, and skip the additives
Both manuals say to use only the manufacturer's specified transmission fluid and to keep it at the correct level. They warn that a fluid other than the recommended one may cause deterioration in shift quality and/or torque converter shudder.
The 2022 Ram 2500/3500 Owner's Manual strongly recommends against special additives: automatic transmission fluid is an engineered product, and supplemental additives may impair its performance. The only exception it names is special dyes for diagnosing leaks. It also says to avoid transmission sealers and not to use chemical flushes, which can damage transmission components.
From the 2022 Ram 2500/3500 Owner's Manual (Selection Of Lubricant; Special Additives) and the 2026 Ram 1500 Owner's Manual (Selection Of Lubricant, page 326), read October 29, 2026.
If a transmission temperature warning light comes on
In the 2026 Ram 1500 Owner's Manual, the Transmission Temperature Warning Light warns of a high transmission fluid temperature, which may happen with strenuous use such as trailer towing. If it comes on, the manual says to stop the vehicle and run the engine at idle or slightly faster, with the transmission in PARK or NEUTRAL, until the light turns off; then you may continue normally.
It warns that driving on with the light on could make the fluid boil over and contact hot engine or exhaust parts and cause a fire, and that continuous driving with the light on will eventually cause severe transmission damage or failure.

Transmission fluid check FAQ
Do you check transmission fluid with the engine running?
For the dipstick-equipped 6-speed automatic in the 2022 Ram 2500/3500 manual, yes: the engine idles for at least 60 seconds and stays running, in PARK, with the parking brake applied. Other transmissions can differ, so follow your own manual.
Should transmission fluid be checked hot or cold?
The 2022 Ram 2500/3500 manual says the 6-speed is best checked at normal operating temperature, 158-176°F, usually after at least 15 miles of driving. The COLD holes are only a rough reference.
Why can't I find my transmission dipstick?
Many transmissions are sealed. The 2026 Ram 1500 manual says routine fluid level checks are not required, so its transmission has no dipstick, and an authorized dealer checks the level with special service tools.
What happens if transmission fluid is overfilled or low?
The 2022 Ram 2500/3500 manual says not to overfill when adding fluid, and the 2026 Ram 1500 manual says operating the vehicle with an improper fluid level can cause severe transmission damage.
Can I add a transmission additive or do a flush?
Both manuals advise against chemical flushes. The 2022 Ram 2500/3500 manual recommends against special additives other than leak-detection dyes, and both say not to use chemical flushes.
How often should transmission fluid be changed?
It depends on the vehicle. The 2026 Ram 1500 manual says the factory fluid lasts the life of the vehicle under normal conditions and should be changed if it becomes contaminated; other vehicles list intervals in their maintenance schedules.
