Electronic Throttle Control (ETC) Light: What It Means
The electronic throttle control (ETC) light tells you the vehicle has found a problem with its ETC system. In the owner's manual example used here, the 2026 Ram 1500, what to do depends on whether the light stays on or flashes. Here is how to read it and when to get help.

The short answer
In the manual example, the ETC Warning Light comes on to indicate a problem with the ETC system. If it comes on while the vehicle is running, stop safely and completely, put the transmission in PARK and cycle the Start button; the light should turn off. If it stays on with the vehicle running, the vehicle will usually be drivable, but see a dealer for service as soon as possible. If it keeps flashing, immediate service is required: you may get reduced performance, a rough idle or an engine stall, and the vehicle may need towing. Your own owner's manual explains its version of the light.
What the ETC light means
In the manual example, the Electronic Throttle Control (ETC) Warning Light is listed with the red warning lights. It will illuminate to indicate a problem with the ETC system. If a problem is detected while the vehicle is running, the light will either stay on or flash, depending on the nature of the problem.
The manual also notes that warning and indicator lights differ based on equipment options and current vehicle status, and that some telltales are optional. Check your own owner's manual for how your vehicle shows this light.

Steady ETC light vs. flashing ETC light
In the manual example, the two ways the light can behave while the vehicle is running call for different responses:
Light stays on
After cycling the Start button with the vehicle safely stopped and in PARK, if the light remains on with the vehicle running, the vehicle will usually be drivable. See an authorized dealer for service as soon as possible.
Light keeps flashing
If the light continues to flash when the vehicle is running, immediate service is required. You may experience reduced performance, an elevated or rough idle, or an engine stall, and the vehicle may require towing.

What to do when the ETC light comes on
Steps based on the manual example:
- When it is safe, bring the vehicle to a complete stop and place the transmission in PARK.
- Cycle the Start button. The manual says the light should turn off.
- If the light stays on with the vehicle running, the vehicle will usually be drivable. See a dealer for service as soon as possible.
- If the light keeps flashing with the vehicle running, immediate service is required. Because the vehicle may lose performance, idle roughly or stall, we suggest not continuing your trip and arranging a tow if needed.

Pressing the brake and accelerator together
The manual example includes a note that is easy to miss: the ETC light may turn on if the accelerator and brake pedals are pressed at the same time. If you rest your left foot on the brake while you accelerate, that may be enough to bring the light on.
If the light came on after both pedals were pressed and it turns off after you stop and cycle the Start button, we suggest keeping an eye on it. If it comes back without both pedals pressed, or stays on, have the vehicle checked.

The start-up bulb check
In the manual example, the ETC light comes on when the Start button is placed in the ON/RUN position and remains on briefly as a bulb check. That is normal. If the light does not come on during starting, the manual says to have the system checked by an authorized dealer.
