Brake Warning Light On: What It Means and What to Do

The red brake warning light watches more than one thing. In the owner's manual example used here, the 2026 Ram 1500, it can mean the parking brake is applied, the brake fluid is low, or there is a problem in the brake system. Here is how to tell which, what to do, and how it differs from the yellow ABS light.

The short answer

First, make sure the parking brake is fully released. In the manual example, if the red brake light stays on with the parking brake released and the fluid at the full mark, it indicates a possible brake hydraulic system malfunction. The manual warns that driving with the red brake light on is dangerous: part of the brake system may have failed and it will take longer to stop, so have the vehicle checked immediately. Your own vehicle's owner's manual explains its version of the light.

What the brake warning light means

In the manual example, the Brake Warning Light is one of the red warning lights. It monitors various brake functions, including brake fluid level and parking brake application. If it turns on, it may indicate that the parking brake is applied, that the brake fluid level is low, or that there is a problem with the Anti-Lock Brake System reservoir.

The manual explains why low fluid matters: the dual brake system keeps a reserve braking capacity if part of the hydraulic system fails, and a leak in either half is shown by the Brake Warning Light, which turns on when the fluid level in the master cylinder drops below a specified level. The light stays on until the cause is corrected. It may also flash momentarily during sharp cornering, which changes fluid level conditions; the manual says the vehicle should then have service performed and the brake fluid level checked.

What to do when the brake light comes on

Steps based on the manual example:

  1. Check the parking brake. The light also turns on when the parking brake is applied with the vehicle in ON/RUN, so make sure it is fully released.
  2. If the light stays on with the parking brake released and the fluid level is at the full mark on the master cylinder reservoir, the manual says it indicates a possible brake hydraulic system malfunction.
  3. We suggest not driving on as normal. The manual warns that driving with the red brake light on is dangerous: part of the brake system may have failed, it will take longer to stop and you could have a collision. Have the vehicle checked immediately.
  4. If brake failure is indicated, the manual says immediate repair is necessary.

The manual also describes a bulb check: when the vehicle is switched from OFF to ON/RUN, the light should come on for about two seconds and then turn off, unless the parking brake is applied or a brake fault is detected (the brake system section says it may stay on for as long as four seconds). If it does not come on at all, have the light inspected by an authorized dealer.

Red brake light vs. yellow ABS light

The manual example describes these lights separately:

Red Brake Warning Light

Covers parking brake application, brake fluid level and the brake hydraulic system. If the Brake System Warning Light remains on or comes on while driving, the brake system is not functioning properly and immediate service is required.

Yellow ABS Warning Light

If it stays on or comes on while driving, the anti-lock portion of the brake system is not functioning and service is required. The manual says the conventional brakes continue to operate normally, and the brakes should be serviced as soon as possible.

Both lights on together

Vehicles with ABS also have Electronic Brake Force Distribution (EBD). If EBD fails, the Brake Warning Light turns on along with the ABS light, and the manual says immediate repair to the ABS system is required.

Parking brake and the brake light

In the manual example, the red light shows only that the parking brake is applied; it does not show how hard it is applied. This Ram has an Electric Park Brake: once the parking brake is fully engaged, the BRAKE telltale in the instrument cluster and an indicator on the switch illuminate, and they go out once it is fully released.

A separate yellow Electric Park Brake Warning Light means the electric park brake is not functioning properly and service is required. The manual notes that this light also comes on if the parking brake switch is held for longer than 20 seconds, and goes out when the switch is released. We suggest confirming the BRAKE telltale is out before you drive.

Brake fluid and the brake light

The manual example says the brake master cylinder fluid level should be checked whenever the vehicle is serviced, or immediately if the Brake System Warning Light is on. With disc brakes, the fluid level can be expected to fall as the brake pads wear, and it should be checked when pads are replaced. If the fluid is abnormally low, the manual says to check the system for leaks.

Its warnings: use only the manufacturer's recommended brake fluid (the type is also identified on the original reservoir), use only new fluid or fluid from a tightly closed container, keep the reservoir cap secured, and do not overfill (overfilling can spill brake fluid on hot engine parts and cause a fire). Why did the brake light flash on a sharp turn?

The manual says the light may flash momentarily during sharp cornering, which changes fluid level conditions, and that the vehicle should have service performed and the brake fluid level checked.

What if the brake light and ABS light are both on?

In the manual example, an Electronic Brake Force Distribution failure turns on the Brake Warning Light along with the ABS light, and immediate repair to the ABS system is required.

Does low brake fluid mean worn brake pads?

The manual says that with disc brakes the fluid level can be expected to fall as the pads wear. If the fluid is abnormally low, it says to check the system for leaks.
