What Is a CVT Transmission?

A CVT, or continuously variable transmission, is a transmission that does not use a fixed set of gears. Here is how it works according to the U.S. Department of Energy's fueleconomy.gov, what it is like to drive using the 2026 Toyota Corolla owner's manual as an example, and what it needs for care.

The short answer

Most conventional transmissions use a fixed number of metal gears to control the ratio between engine speed and wheel speed. Instead of gears, a CVT uses a pair of variable-diameter pulleys connected by a belt or chain that can produce an infinite number of engine-to-wheel speed ratios. Fueleconomy.gov lists the advantages as seamless acceleration without the jerk or jolt of gear changes, no frequent downshifting or gear hunting on hills, and better fuel efficiency, which benefits stop-and-go driving more than steady highway driving.

How a CVT works

In most conventional transmissions, a fixed number of metal gears sets the ratio between how fast the engine turns and how fast the wheels turn. Fueleconomy.gov explains that a CVT replaces those gears with a pair of variable-diameter pulleys connected by a belt or chain. Because the pulleys can change size smoothly, the transmission can produce an infinite number of engine-to-wheel speed ratios instead of a handful of fixed steps.

Why carmakers use CVTs

Fueleconomy.gov lists these advantages for a CVT: seamless acceleration without the jerk or jolt from changing gears, no frequent downshifting or gear hunting on hills, and better fuel efficiency, which benefits stop-and-go driving more than steady-speed highway driving. It compares the technologies like this:

TechnologyPotential efficiency improvement listed
Continuously variable transmission (CVT)3%-4%
Dual clutch transmission (DCT)3%-4%
Additional gears: 6, 7 or 8 speeds compared with a 4-speed automatic2%, 2%-3% and 3%-4%

What a CVT is like to drive

The 2026 Toyota Corolla Owner's Manual, for its CVT, lists these shift positions and modes:

P, R, N and D

Park, Reverse, Neutral and Drive. The manual says to use D for normal driving to improve fuel efficiency and reduce noise.

B position (models without paddle shifters)

For applying moderate engine braking when driving down hills.

M position (models with paddle shifters)

A 10-speed sport sequential shiftmatic mode: you choose gear steps M1 to M10 with the shift lever or paddles. The manual says you can choose from 10 levels of engine braking force, and a lower step gives more engine braking with higher engine speed.

Sport mode

With the lever in D and sport mode selected, the Corolla's G AI-SHIFT automatically selects a suitable gear for sporty driving based on driver input and conditions.

From the 2026 Toyota Corolla Owner's Manual (publication OM12W27U; Continuously variable transmission, pages 150 to 153 and 155), read November 4, 2026. Other CVT vehicles use their own positions and names, so check your owner's manual.

CVT fluid is its own type

A CVT uses fluid made for that transmission. In the manual example, the Corolla's CVT takes Toyota Genuine CVT Fluid FE, with a reference fluid capacity of 9.0 qt. (8.5 L). The manual says to contact your Toyota dealer if replacement is necessary, and warns that using CVT fluid other than that type may cause abnormal noise or vibration, or damage the transmission.

Other brands specify other fluids, so check your own owner's manual before anything is added or changed. See also our guide on how to check transmission fluid.

CVT warnings to know

The manual example describes how its CVT protects itself:

Transmission oil temperature high

If the fluid temperature is high, the Corolla shows "Transmission Oil Temp High Stop in a Safe Place and See Owner's Manual." The manual says to return to D, reduce speed by easing off the accelerator, stop in a safe place, shift to P and let the engine idle until the message goes out. If it does not go out after a while, have the vehicle inspected.

Fail-safe control

If the system detects a malfunction in the parts that perform the shifting function, it uses fail-safe measures such as restricting shifting or transmission ratio control, and the malfunction indicator lamp turns on.

Malfunction indicator lamp

Among other things, this light indicates a malfunction in the electronic continuously variable transmission control system. For this light the manual says to immediately stop the vehicle in a safe place and contact your Toyota dealer.

CVT transmission FAQ

What does CVT stand for?

Continuously variable transmission. Instead of a fixed number of gears, it uses a pair of variable-diameter pulleys connected by a belt or chain, according to fueleconomy.gov.

Does a CVT have gears?

Not fixed gears. A CVT can produce an infinite number of engine-to-wheel speed ratios. Some CVT cars offer selectable steps anyway: the 2026 Toyota Corolla with paddle shifters has an M position with 10 gear steps, M1 to M10.

Is a CVT better on gas?

Fueleconomy.gov lists better fuel efficiency as an advantage, with a potential efficiency improvement of 3%-4%, and says the benefit is larger in stop-and-go driving than at steady highway speeds.

What fluid does a CVT use?

Use only the fluid your owner's manual specifies. The 2026 Corolla manual, for example, calls for Toyota Genuine CVT Fluid FE and warns that other CVT fluids may cause abnormal noise or vibration, or damage the transmission.

What does B mean on a CVT shifter?

On the 2026 Corolla without paddle shifters, B is for applying moderate engine braking when driving down hills. D is for normal driving.

What are your service hours?

Monday to Friday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. We are closed Sunday.
