Traction Control Light: What It Means and What to Do
In the owner's manual example used here, the 2026 Ram 1500, the light most drivers call the traction control light is the Electronic Stability Control (ESC) light, and it flashes when the Traction Control System is working, too. A flashing light, a light that stays on and an ESC OFF light each mean something different. Here is how to tell them apart and what to do.

The short answer
In the manual example used here, a flashing ESC light means the tires are losing traction and the stability or traction control system is active: ease up on the accelerator, use as little throttle as possible and adapt your speed to the road. If the light comes on and stays on with the vehicle running, the system has detected a malfunction; if it remains on after several key cycles and several miles above 30 mph, the manual says to see an authorized dealer as soon as possible. Your own vehicle's owner's manual explains its version of these lights.
Which light is which
The manual example describes two yellow lights for this system:
ESC Activation/Malfunction Indicator Light
Called the ESC Active Warning Light in the manual's light list. It flashes when ESC is active and also flashes when the Traction Control System (TCS) is active. If it comes on continuously with the vehicle running, a malfunction has been detected in the ESC system.
ESC OFF Indicator Light
Shows that ESC is off, or, as the stability control section puts it, that the driver has chosen to have ESC in a reduced mode.
At start-up
Both lights come on momentarily each time the vehicle is switched to ON/RUN. The manual says the ESC light should then go out with the vehicle running.
Buzzing or clicking
The manual says the ESC system will make buzzing or clicking sounds when it is active. This is normal, and the sounds stop when ESC becomes inactive.
From the 2026 Ram 1500 Owner's Manual (ESC Active Warning Light and ESC OFF Warning Light, pages 143 and 144; ESC Activation/Malfunction Indicator Light and ESC OFF Indicator Light, pages 241 and 242), read November 3, 2026. Lights vary by vehicle; check your own owner's manual.
Traction control light flashing
In the manual example, the light starts to flash as soon as the tires lose traction and the ESC system becomes active, and it also flashes when the Traction Control System is active. The manual explains what the systems are doing: TCS monitors wheel spin on the driven wheels and, if it detects spin, may apply brake pressure to the spinning wheel(s) and/or reduce power. ESC compares the path you are steering with the path the vehicle is actually taking and brakes the appropriate wheel to counter oversteer or understeer.
What to do: if the light begins to flash during acceleration, the manual says to ease up on the accelerator and apply as little throttle as possible, and to adapt your speed and driving to the road conditions. In our experience the light often flashes on snow, ice, rain or gravel; on its own, a brief flash on a slippery road is the system doing its job.

Traction control light stays on
A light that comes on and stays on with the vehicle running means something else. In the manual example, it means a malfunction has been detected in the ESC system.
The manual's guidance: if the light remains on after several key cycles, and the vehicle has been driven several miles (kilometers) at speeds greater than 30 mph (48 km/h), see an authorized dealer as soon as possible to have the problem diagnosed and corrected. In our view, drive gently for the conditions until it is checked.

What the ESC OFF light means
The ESC OFF light shows that ESC has been turned off or placed in a reduced mode. In the manual example, ESC On is the normal mode: the system is in this mode whenever the vehicle is started, and it should be used for most driving conditions. Each time the vehicle is started, ESC is on again even if it was turned off before.
The manual warns that with ESC switched off, the enhanced vehicle stability it offers is unavailable, and in an emergency evasive maneuver it will not engage to help. Its Full Off mode is intended for off-highway or off-road use only. If you see the ESC OFF light and did not turn ESC off, restarting the vehicle returns ESC to its normal mode in this example; if the light stays on, we recommend having it checked.
From the 2026 Ram 1500 Owner's Manual (ESC OFF Warning Light, page 144; ESC Operating Modes, page 241; ESC OFF Indicator Light, page 242), read November 3, 2026.
When turning ESC off can help
The manual example gives one common reason to use the ESC OFF button: freeing a vehicle stuck in mud, sand or snow. Before rocking the vehicle back and forth between DRIVE and REVERSE, it says to push the ESC OFF button to place ESC in Partial OFF mode, and once the vehicle is free, to push the ESC OFF button again to restore ESC On mode.
- Use the least amount of accelerator that keeps the rocking motion going, without spinning the wheels or racing the engine.
- Do not spin the wheels faster than 30 mph (48 km/h), or for longer than 30 seconds continuously without stopping.
- When rocking between DRIVE and REVERSE, do not spin the wheels faster than 15 mph (24 km/h), and let the engine idle in NEUTRAL for at least one minute after every five rocking cycles.
- Do not let anyone near a spinning wheel, no matter what the speed.

Tires, maintenance and ESC
The manual warns that changes to the steering system, suspension, braking system, tire type and size or wheel size may adversely affect ESC performance, and that improperly inflated and unevenly worn tires may also degrade it. That makes tire care part of keeping stability and traction control working as designed.
Our tire pressure light, tire tread depth and tire rotation guides cover the basics.

Traction control light FAQ
What does a flashing traction control light mean?
In the 2026 Ram 1500 owner's manual, the ESC light flashes when the tires lose traction and ESC becomes active, and also when the Traction Control System is active. The manual says to ease up on the accelerator and adapt your speed to the road.
Why is my traction control light on and staying on?
In the manual example, a light that comes on continuously with the vehicle running means a malfunction has been detected in the ESC system. If it remains on after several key cycles and several miles above 30 mph, see an authorized dealer as soon as possible.
What does the ESC OFF light mean?
It shows that ESC is off or in a reduced mode. In the manual example, ESC returns to its normal On mode each time the vehicle is started.
Should I turn traction control off in snow?
The manual example says ESC On should be used for most driving conditions. It recommends pushing the ESC OFF button for Partial OFF mode before rocking a vehicle stuck in mud, sand or snow, then pushing it again to restore ESC On once the vehicle is free.
Is the buzzing or clicking normal when the light flashes?
Yes. The manual says the ESC system will make buzzing or clicking sounds when it is active, and the sounds stop when ESC becomes inactive.
Can tires affect traction control?
The manual warns that tire type and size changes, improperly inflated tires and unevenly worn tires may degrade ESC performance.
