Seat Belt Light: What It Means and Why It Flashes

The seat belt light typically reminds the driver and front passenger to buckle up. In the owner's manual example used here, the 2026 Ram 1500, it can stay on, flash, and chime depending on speed and who is unbuckled. Here is how it works and why it sometimes comes on with nobody in the passenger seat.

The short answer

In the manual example, the Seat Belt Reminder Warning Light indicates when the driver or passenger seat belt is unbuckled. When you first start, an unbuckled driver gets a chime and the light. While driving, if the driver or front passenger stays unbuckled, the light will flash or stay on and a chime will sound, and the light stays on until the belts are buckled. Items or an animal on the front passenger seat may also set it off. Your own owner's manual explains its version of the light.

What the seat belt light means

In the manual example, the Seat Belt Reminder Warning Light is listed with the red warning lights. It indicates when the driver or passenger seat belt is unbuckled.

It is part of a system the manual calls BeltAlert (listed as If Equipped), a feature intended to remind the driver and outboard front seat passenger (if equipped with passenger BeltAlert) to buckle their seat belts. BeltAlert is active whenever the Start button is in the START or ON/RUN position.

The manual also notes that warning and indicator lights differ based on equipment options and current vehicle status, and that some telltales are optional. Check your own owner's manual for how your vehicle shows this light.

The seat belt light at start-up

In the manual example, if the driver is unbuckled when the Start button is first in the START or ON/RUN position, a chime will signal for a few seconds. If the driver or outboard front passenger is unbuckled at that point, the Seat Belt Reminder Light will turn on and remain on until both outboard front seat belts are buckled.

Why the seat belt light flashes while driving

In the manual example, the light's behavior on the road follows a set pattern:

Warning sequence

When the vehicle is moving above a specified speed range and the driver or outboard front passenger is unbuckled, the light blinks and an intermittent chime sounds.

After the sequence

Once the warning sequence has completed, the light remains on until the seat belts are buckled.

It can repeat

The warning sequence may repeat based on vehicle speed until the driver and occupied outboard front passenger seat belts are buckled.

Unbuckling on the road

If the driver or outboard front passenger unbuckles while the vehicle is traveling, the warning sequence will begin until the belts are buckled again.

From the 2026 Ram 1500 Owner's Manual (BeltAlert Warning Sequence and Change Of Status, page 46; Seat Belt Reminder Warning Light, page 141), read November 4, 2026.

Seat belt light on with nobody in the passenger seat

In the manual example, the outboard front passenger seat BeltAlert is not active when that seat is unoccupied. But BeltAlert may be triggered when an animal or other items are placed on the outboard front passenger seat, or when the seat is folded flat (if equipped).

The manual recommends that pets be restrained in the rear seat (if equipped) in pet harnesses or pet carriers that are secured by seat belts, and that cargo is properly stowed. If something on the passenger seat seems to set off the light, we suggest moving it and seeing whether the light goes out.

Turning BeltAlert off, and belt condition

In the manual example, BeltAlert can be activated or deactivated by an authorized dealer, and FCA US LLC does not recommend deactivating it. Even when BeltAlert has been deactivated, the Seat Belt Reminder Light will turn on and remain on until the driver and outboard front seat passenger seat belts are buckled.

The manual also warns that a twisted seat belt may not protect you properly. Be sure the belt is flat against your body, without twists. If you cannot straighten a seat belt, it says to take the vehicle to an authorized dealer immediately and have it fixed.

If the light stays on with everyone buckled and nothing on the passenger seat, we suggest having it checked. For other dashboard lights, see our check engine light and ABS light guides.
