Oil Pressure Light On: What It Means and What to Do

The red oil pressure warning light on the dashboard warns of low engine oil pressure; in the owner's manual example used here, that is different from a low oil level reminder. Here is what the light means, what to do when it comes on while you drive, how to check the oil, and how routine oil care fits in.

The short answer

In the owner's manual example used here, the oil pressure warning light comes on with a chime to indicate low engine oil pressure. If it comes on while driving, safely stop and turn off the engine as soon as possible. The manual then says to restart and watch the light: if it is still on, turn the engine off and contact an authorized dealer, and do not operate the vehicle until the cause is corrected. What the oil pressure light means

In the owner's manual example used on this page, the 2026 Ram 1500, the Oil Pressure Warning Light is one of the red warning lights. The manual says it will illuminate, and a chime will sound, to indicate low engine oil pressure.

The manual adds an important point: this light does not indicate how much oil is in the engine. The engine oil level must be checked under the hood (or, on some engines, on the instrument cluster display). So the light is a warning about pressure; in our view, finding the cause is a job for a technician.

What to do when the oil pressure light comes on

The manual's steps if the light and chime turn on while driving:

Safely stop the vehicle and turn off the engine as soon as possible.
After the vehicle is safely stopped, restart the engine and watch the Oil Pressure Warning Light.
If the light is still on, turn the engine off and contact an authorized dealer for further assistance. Do not operate the vehicle until the cause is corrected.
If the light is no longer on, the engine can be operated, but the manual recommends taking the vehicle to an authorized dealer as soon as possible, and again says not to operate the vehicle until the cause is corrected.

Our suggestion while you arrange service: note when the light came on (at idle, while driving, after an oil change) and whether any other warning lights or messages came on with it. A phone photo of the dashboard helps your technician.

Oil pressure light vs. oil level warnings

The same manual describes separate oil level messages for some engines. They mean different things:

Oil Pressure Warning Light

A red light with a chime that indicates low engine oil pressure. It does not indicate how much oil is in the engine.

Oil Level Low (Add 1 Quart)

On engines with an oil level display, this warning appears when the engine needs more oil. The manual says to add 1 quart of manufacturer specified motor oil within the next 300 miles (500 km).

Oil Level Critically Low (Add 2 Quarts)

Add two quarts of manufacturer specified oil as soon as possible. The manual says continuing to drive with a critically low oil level may damage the engine.

Oil Level Critically High

Contact an authorized dealer for service. The manual says continuing to drive with a critically high oil level may damage the engine.

How to check the engine oil level

For engines with a dipstick, the manual example says to check the oil level at regular intervals, such as every fuel stop. The best time is about five minutes after a fully warmed up engine is shut off, with the vehicle on level ground for a more accurate reading.

Keep the oil level within the crosshatch markings on the dipstick. In this manual, adding 1 quart (1.0 L) when the reading is at the low end of the range raises the level to the high end. The manual cautions that overfilling or underfilling the crankcase will cause oil aeration or loss of oil pressure, which could damage the engine. Oil care that helps

The manual example lists checking the engine oil level once a month or before a long trip. Its oil change indicator system reminds you when scheduled maintenance is due; when the message appears, it says to have the vehicle serviced as soon as possible, within the next 500 miles (805 km), and that oil change intervals should never exceed 10,000 miles (16,000 km), 12 months or 350 hours of engine run time, whichever comes first.
