Low Fuel Light: When It Comes On and What to Do

The low fuel light is a reminder to refuel soon. In the owner's manual example used here, the 2026 Ram 1500, it comes on when the tank is under a quarter full and the Distance to Empty drops below 50 miles. Here is what that means, how to read the fuel gauge, and how to refuel safely.

The short answer

In the manual example, the Low Fuel Warning Light turns on when the fuel level is less than a quarter tank and the Distance to Empty is less than 50 miles (80 km). It stays on until fuel is added, and a single chime sounds with the warning. It is a yellow warning light that means it is time to refuel. Trigger points vary by vehicle, so check your owner's manual.

What the low fuel light means

In the manual example, the Low Fuel Warning Light is listed with the yellow warning lights. When the fuel level is less than a quarter tank, and the Distance to Empty is less than 50 miles (80 km), the light turns on and remains on until fuel is added. A single warning chime sounds with the low fuel warning.

A low fuel warning can also affect other features. In the manual example, one of the conditions for using the truck's On-Board Power Panel is that the vehicle must not display a low fuel warning.

From the 2026 Ram 1500 Owner's Manual (symbol glossary, page 12; On-Board Power Panel, page 97; Low Fuel Warning Light, page 144), read November 4, 2026. Lights vary by vehicle; check your own owner's manual.

How many miles can you drive with the low fuel light on?

In the manual example, the light comes on once Distance to Empty is under 50 miles (80 km) and the tank is under a quarter full, so the display shows under 50 miles when it first lights up. The manual does not promise a set number of miles after the light comes on, and trigger points vary by vehicle.

We suggest treating the light as a signal to stop at the next convenient station rather than a countdown to test.

Reading the fuel gauge

In the manual example:

The pointer

The fuel gauge pointer shows the level of fuel in the fuel tank when the ignition is in the ON/RUN position.

The fuel pump symbol

The fuel pump symbol points to the side of the vehicle where the fuel door is located.

Refueling safely

The manual example has a capless fuel filler on the left side of the vehicle, sealed by two flapper doors. Its refueling steps and warnings:

  1. Put the vehicle in PARK and switch the ignition off. The manual warns never to add fuel when the engine is running, which is in violation of most state and federal fire regulations and may cause the Malfunction Indicator Light to turn on.
  2. Open the fuel filler door and insert the nozzle fully into the filler pipe. The nozzle opens and holds both flapper doors while refueling.
  3. When the nozzle clicks or shuts off, the tank is full. Keep the nozzle in the filler for five seconds to let fuel drain from the nozzle, then remove it.
  4. Do not top off the tank after filling, to avoid fuel spillage and overfilling. Then close the fuel filler door.

The manual also warns never to have smoking materials lit in or near the vehicle when the fuel door is open or the tank is being filled, and always to place a gas container on the ground before filling it. In certain cold conditions, ice may keep the fuel filler door from opening; the manual says to lightly push around the door to break the ice buildup.

From the 2026 Ram 1500 Owner's Manual (Refueling The Vehicle, pages 214 and 215), read November 4, 2026. Fuel doors and fillers vary by vehicle.

If you run out of fuel

In the manual example, the vehicle has a refueling funnel for its capless fuel system, stored under the passenger seat with the jack and tools (if equipped). The manual explains that most gas cans will not open the flapper doors, so the funnel is used for emergency refueling with an approved gas can: insert the funnel fully into the filler pipe opening to hold the flapper doors open, then pour fuel into the funnel. Afterward, remove the funnel and clean it off before putting it back in the spare tire storage area.

If your vehicle has a capless filler, check your own owner's manual for where its funnel is kept before you need it.

Low fuel light vs. fuel level sensor light

Some vehicles have a separate warning for the fuel gauge itself. In the manual example, the Fuel Level Sensor Failure Warning Light (if equipped) illuminates along with a dedicated message on the display if a problem is detected with the fuel level sensor. If that light comes on, the manual says to see an authorized dealer immediately.
