Lane Departure Warning and Lane Keep Assist Explained

Lane departure warning tells you when you drift toward a lane line, and lane keep assist adds a nudge at the steering wheel. Names differ by brand. In the owner's manual example used here, the 2026 Ram 1500, the feature is called Active Lane Management (ALM), an If Equipped feature. Here is how it works, what the dash lines mean and how to change its settings.

The short answer

In the manual example, Active Lane Management uses a forward facing camera to detect lane markings or road edges and measure the vehicle's position in the lane. Above 37 mph and below 112 mph, if you approach or cross a lane marking with no turn signal on, it warns you in the instrument cluster and, depending on your settings, adds steering assist torque, a steering wheel vibration, or both.

How lane departure warning and lane keep assist work

In the manual example, the Active Lane Management system uses a forward facing camera to detect lane markings or road edges and to measure the vehicle position within the lane boundaries. If the vehicle has Blind Spot Monitoring (BSM), ALM also uses its sensors to detect vehicles in adjacent lanes while you are preparing to change lanes. The system is operational above 37 mph (60 km/h) and below 112 mph (180 km/h).

When both lane markings are detected and the vehicle approaches or crosses one with no turn signal and an empty blind spot zone, ALM gives a visual warning in the instrument cluster along with steering assist torque, if configured in Uconnect Settings. If you cross the marking, it guides the vehicle back toward the center of the lane, vibrates the steering wheel, or both, depending on settings. With only one lane marking detected, it gives a visual warning and steering assist torque (if configured), then a flashing warning and a steering wheel vibration (if configured) as you cross the line. You can override the steering assist at any time by applying force to the steering wheel.

What the lane lines on the dash mean

Gray lines

The system is on and ready to provide warnings for the lane markings it has detected.

Solid yellow line

The system senses you are approaching or drifting toward that lane line, and may apply steering assist in the opposite direction of the line (if programmed).

Flashing yellow line

The system senses the lane line is being crossed, and may vibrate the steering wheel (if programmed).

The manual example describes left departures and says right departures work similarly. From the 2026 Ram 1500 Owner's Manual (Active Lane Management Warning Message, pages 249 and 250), read November 4, 2026.

Turn signals, lane changes and blind spots

In the manual example, the system suppresses its visual warnings, steering vibration and steering assistance when you use the turn signal, the blind spot zone is clear and a lane change is occurring. If the turn signal is on and Blind Spot Monitoring detects a vehicle in the adjacent lane on that side, the BSM light on the mirror flashes, and if you keep trying to change lanes, ALM provides steering assist and/or vibration to keep the vehicle in its lane.

When operating conditions are met, ALM also monitors whether your hands are on the steering wheel and gives an audible and visual warning if they are removed. The system cancels if you do not return your hands to the wheel.

How to turn it on or off

In the manual example, the Active Lane Management button is above or to the right of the Uconnect display. Push it to turn the system on (the button LED turns off) and a message shows in the instrument cluster. Push it again to turn the system off (the LED turns on). The system keeps its last on or off state from the previous ignition cycle.

Settings you can change

In the manual example, these are set in the Uconnect system:

Warning type

Vibration Only, Steering Assist Only, or Vibration And Steering Assist.

Vibration intensity

High, medium or low.

Steering assist strength

High, medium or low.

Warning zone sensitivity

Early, medium or late.

From the 2026 Ram 1500 Owner's Manual (Changing Active Lane Management Status, pages 250 and 251), read November 4, 2026.

When it does not assist

The manual example says the system will not apply vibration or steering assist whenever a safety system engages, such as Anti-Lock Brakes, Traction Control, Electronic Stability Control or Forward Collision Warning. Blind Spot Monitoring is forced on when ALM is enabled, and ALM is suppressed when Active Driving Assist, if equipped, is engaged.

Because it relies on a camera reading lane markings or road edges, check your own owner's manual for the conditions that limit the system on your vehicle.

Lane departure warning FAQ

What is the difference between lane departure warning and lane keep assist?

Lane departure warning alerts you when you drift toward or across a lane line; lane keep assist adds steering input to guide you back. In the 2026 Ram 1500 manual example, Active Lane Management does both: a visual warning, plus steering assist and/or steering wheel vibration depending on settings.

At what speed does lane keep assist work?

In the manual example, Active Lane Management is operational above 37 mph (60 km/h) and below 112 mph (180 km/h).

Why does my steering wheel vibrate when I cross a lane line?

In the manual example, a steering wheel vibration is one of the selectable warnings when the system senses the lane line is being crossed. You can choose Vibration Only, Steering Assist Only, or both in the Uconnect settings.

Does it work when I use my turn signal?

In the manual example, warnings are suppressed when you signal, the blind spot zone is clear and a lane change is occurring. If Blind Spot Monitoring detects a vehicle on that side, the system can still apply steering assist and/or vibration.

How do I turn off lane keep assist?

In the manual example, push the Active Lane Management button above or to the right of the Uconnect display; the button LED turns on when the system is off. It keeps the last on or off state from the previous ignition cycle.

Can I override the steering assist?

Yes. The manual example says the driver may override the steering assist warning by applying force to the steering wheel at any time.

What are your service hours?
