How Long Do Car Batteries Last?
A car battery wears out gradually until it can no longer start the engine. This guide sums up what AAA's auto repair articles say about how long batteries last, what shortens their life, and the signs that a battery is getting weak.

The short answer
AAA says car batteries typically last three to five years, and that time, heat and vibration are the three key factors that affect battery life. AAA says a battery may last five years or longer in cooler northern climates, while around three years is more typical in hot southern locales. Once a battery reaches its third year, AAA recommends having it tested every year.
How long a car battery lasts
Batteries gradually deteriorate until they can no longer provide enough power to start an engine. AAA says this wear time could take three to five years, and that a vehicle's usage pattern is one factor in how fast a battery ages.
Where you live matters too. AAA explains that heat helps the chemical reaction a battery uses to make electricity, but it also speeds up battery degradation. In cooler northern climates a battery may last five years or longer; in hot southern locales, about three years is more typical.

What shortens car battery life
AAA names time, heat and vibration as the key factors, plus a few less common ones:
Short trips and long parking
Batteries in cars driven mostly on short trips may not fully recharge, and batteries in vehicles parked for long periods naturally self-discharge. AAA says a maintenance charger keeps the battery fully charged and extends its service life.
Heat
Under-hood temperatures can exceed 200 degrees Fahrenheit in hot weather. AAA notes automakers may isolate the battery, add a heat shield or move it outside the engine compartment, often under the back seat or trunk floor.
Vibration
Vibration breaks down internal battery parts. Missing or loose hold-down hardware can significantly shorten battery life.
Charging problems
A malfunctioning charging system that persistently under- or over-charges the battery speeds up battery aging.
Going completely dead
AAA says letting any car battery go completely dead takes a big chunk out of its lifespan, even if you recharge it and put it back in service.

Signs of a weak car battery
AAA lists these signs that may point to a weak or failing battery:
- The engine cranks slowly.
- The battery or charging warning light comes on.
- A clicking noise when you turn the key, which might mean a bad connection.
- Problems with electrical components.
- Incandescent headlights that look dim, especially at idle.
- You need jump-starts often.
- A rotten, sulfur smell from the battery, which can mean damage.
- A swollen or bulging battery case, which often means overcharging or overheating.
Not every failing battery shows obvious symptoms, so AAA suggests having the battery inspected at every oil change: the cable connections should be clean and tight, and the hold-down hardware secure.

When to test or replace your battery
Once a battery reaches its third year, AAA recommends having it tested every year. A battery test shows how far the battery has deteriorated, so you know when it is time for a replacement. At five years, AAA says a battery is nearing the end of its lifespan and it is generally wise to start considering a replacement; if you are unsure, have it tested.
Batteries are not one size fits all. AAA says to match the battery type, physical size, terminal layout and cold cranking amps (CCA) or amp-hour rating to your vehicle, and recommends a replacement of the same type as the original factory battery, conventional or AGM (absorbent glass mat). CCA is an industry measure of how much power a battery can deliver at zero degrees Fahrenheit. If you are not sure which battery your vehicle needs, check your owner's manual or ask a technician.

Car battery life FAQ
How long do car batteries last?
AAA says car batteries typically last three to five years. Time, heat and vibration are the key factors.
Do car batteries last longer in cold climates?
AAA says heat speeds up battery degradation, so a battery may last five years or longer in cooler northern climates, while about three years is more typical in hot southern locales.
How often should a car battery be tested?
AAA recommends having the battery tested every year once it reaches its third year, and having it inspected at every oil change.
Should I replace a five-year-old battery?
AAA says a five-year-old battery is nearing the end of its lifespan and it is generally wise to start considering a replacement. A battery test can show whether it has life left.
What are the signs of a dying car battery?
AAA lists slow cranking, a battery or charging warning light, clicking when you turn the key, electrical problems, dim incandescent headlights at idle, frequent jump-starts, a sulfur smell and a swollen battery case.
Does letting a battery go dead shorten its life?
Yes. AAA says letting any car battery go completely dead takes a big chunk out of its lifespan, even if it is recharged and put back in service.
