Forward Collision Warning and Automatic Braking Explained
Forward collision warning alerts you when a frontal collision looks likely, and many systems can also brake. Names and details differ by brand, so this guide uses one owner's manual as its example, the 2026 Ram 1500, where the feature is called Forward Collision Warning (FCW) with Mitigation, an If Equipped feature.

The short answer
In the manual example, FCW with Mitigation uses forward looking sensors and the Electronic Brake Controller to judge whether a frontal collision is probable. If it is, you get audible and visual warnings and possibly a brake jerk. If you do not act, it applies limited active braking, and if you brake but not hard enough, it adds brake force. The manual says FCW is not intended to avoid a collision on its own; the driver is responsible for braking and steering.
How forward collision warning works
In the manual example, FCW with Mitigation gives the driver audible warnings and visual warnings in the instrument cluster display, and may apply a brake jerk, when it detects a potential frontal collision. The warnings and limited braking are meant to give the driver enough time to react, avoid or mitigate the potential collision.
FCW monitors information from the forward looking sensors and the Electronic Brake Controller (EBC) to calculate the probability of a forward collision. The minimum speed for FCW activation is 3 mph (5 km/h). When the system decides a collision with the vehicle in front is no longer probable, the warning message turns off.
From the 2026 Ram 1500 Owner's Manual (Forward Collision Warning (FCW) With Mitigation, pages 237 and 238), read November 4, 2026.
When it brakes for you
In the manual example, if the driver does not act on the progressive warnings, the system provides a limited level of active braking to help slow the vehicle and mitigate the potential collision. If the driver brakes but not with enough force, the system compensates with additional brake force as required.
If an FCW with Mitigation event begins below 38 mph (62 km/h), the system may provide the maximum braking possible to mitigate the collision. If the event stops the vehicle completely, the system holds it at a standstill for two seconds and then releases the brakes.
From the 2026 Ram 1500 Owner's Manual (Forward Collision Warning (FCW) With Mitigation, page 237), read November 4, 2026.
False alerts and limits
The manual example lists these notes:
Alerts on non-vehicles
FCW alerts may be triggered by objects other than vehicles, such as guardrails or sign posts, based on the course prediction. The manual calls this expected.
Objects it may not react to
Overhead objects, ground reflections, objects not in the vehicle's path, stationary objects that are far away, oncoming traffic, and leading vehicles at the same or a higher speed.
Do not test it
It is unsafe to test FCW. After four Active Braking events within a key cycle, the Active Braking part of FCW is deactivated until the next key cycle.
On-road use only
FCW is intended for on-road use. If the vehicle is taken off-road, FCW should be deactivated to prevent unnecessary warnings.
From the 2026 Ram 1500 Owner's Manual (FCW notes, page 238), read November 4, 2026.
FCW settings
In the manual example, FCW is turned on or off with the forward collision button in the Uconnect control settings, and its status and sensitivity are set in the Uconnect system:
Off
No warnings of a possible collision with the vehicle in front. "FCW OFF" shows in the instrument cluster display.
Only Warning
Warnings only, with no limited active braking or additional brake support.
Warning and Braking
Audible and visual warnings plus autonomous braking.
Sensitivity: Far, Medium or Near
Far warns of a more distant possible collision and may give more warnings; Near warns of a closer one, gives less reaction time and may give fewer warnings.
The FCW state is kept from one key cycle to the next, so if you turn it off it stays off when you restart. From the 2026 Ram 1500 Owner's Manual (Turning FCW On Or Off; FCW Braking Status And Sensitivity, pages 238 and 239), read November 4, 2026.
FCW warning messages
ACC/FCW Limited Functionality
Shown momentarily, alone or with "Clean Front Windshield," when a condition may limit FCW. The vehicle is still drivable, but active braking may not be fully available. The system returns to full performance when the condition clears; if the problem persists, the manual says to see an authorized dealer.
ACC/FCW or Cruise/FCW Unavailable Service Required
If the system turns off and either message shows, there is an internal system fault. The vehicle is still drivable under normal conditions; the manual says to have the system checked by an authorized dealer.
From the 2026 Ram 1500 Owner's Manual (FCW Limited Warning; Service FCW Warning, page 239), read November 4, 2026.
Related systems in the same manual
The manual example also lists Evasive Steering Assist (ESA), If Equipped, a sub feature of the Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB) system that can help the driver steer around an object when FCW detects a potential frontal collision and the driver makes an evasive move. It works when FCW is on, above 34 mph (55 km/h) and below 83 mph (135 km/h), uses Blind Spot Monitoring, radar and cameras to find an open path, does not activate in poor visibility or poor road conditions, and cannot be turned on or off on its own.
Pedestrian Emergency Braking (PEB), If Equipped, is part of FCW: it gives warnings and may brake automatically for a potential frontal collision with a pedestrian or cyclist, and may brake to mitigate if the event begins below 37 mph (60 km/h). The manual says none of these systems is intended to avoid a collision on its own or can detect every type of potential collision.

Forward collision warning FAQ
What does forward collision warning do?
It warns you when a frontal collision looks probable. In the 2026 Ram 1500 owner's manual example, FCW with Mitigation gives audible and visual warnings, may apply a brake jerk, and can apply limited active braking if you do not react.
Will forward collision warning stop the car by itself?
It can brake, but it is not meant to avoid a collision on its own. In the manual example, if an event begins below 38 mph the system may provide maximum braking, and if it stops the vehicle it holds it for two seconds and then releases the brakes. The driver is responsible for braking and steering.
Why did my forward collision warning go off for no reason?
The manual example says FCW alerts may be triggered by objects other than vehicles, such as guardrails or sign posts, based on the course prediction, and calls this expected.
Can I turn off forward collision warning?
In the manual example, yes: press the forward collision button in the Uconnect control settings. "FCW OFF" then shows in the cluster, and the setting stays off after a restart. You can also choose Only Warning to keep the warnings without the braking.
Should I turn FCW off when off-roading?
The manual example says FCW is intended for on-road use only, and that if the vehicle is taken off-road, FCW should be deactivated to prevent unnecessary warnings.
What does ACC/FCW Limited Functionality mean?
In the manual example, a condition may be limiting FCW and active braking may not be fully available. It returns to full performance when the condition clears; if the problem persists, see an authorized dealer.
