Blind Spot Monitoring and Rear Cross Traffic Alert Explained
Blind spot monitoring lights a warning in your side mirror when a vehicle is in the lane next to you, and rear cross traffic alert warns you of vehicles crossing behind you as you back out. Names and details differ by brand, so this guide uses one owner's manual as its example, the 2026 Ram 1500, where the features are called Blind Spot Monitoring (BSM) and Rear Cross Path (RCP).

The short answer
In the manual example, BSM uses two radar sensors inside the rear fascia/bumper to detect vehicles entering the blind spot zones from the rear, front or side. At 7 mph or higher it lights the BSM Warning Light in the outside mirror on that side, and if you turn on the signal toward an alert, it can also chime, depending on the alert setting. It is only an aid: it is not designed to detect pedestrians, bicyclists or animals, so always check your mirrors, glance over your shoulder and signal before changing lanes.
How blind spot monitoring works
In the manual example, the BSM system uses two radar sensors, located inside the rear fascia/bumper, to detect highway licensable vehicles (automobiles, trucks, motorcycles and so on) that enter the blind spot zones from the rear, front or side of the vehicle. When the vehicle is started, the BSM Warning Light briefly illuminates in both outside rearview mirrors to show the system is operational.
The sensors operate in any forward gear. The detection zone covers about one lane in width on both sides of the vehicle, 12 ft (3.8 m), and its length starts at the side of the vehicle near the B-pillar and extends about 10 ft (3 m) beyond the rear fascia/bumper. BSM monitors these zones when the vehicle speed is 7 mph (11 km/h) or higher, and alerts earlier on faster-approaching vehicles, up to a 33 mph (54 km/h) difference.

What the mirror light and chime mean
Mirror light on
The BSM Warning Light in the outside mirror on that side shows a detected vehicle in the detection zone.
Chime when you signal
If you turn on the signal toward the side with an alert, an audible chime can be heard and the radio volume is reduced (in the Lights/Chime setting).
Both mirror lights on with a message
If the cluster shows "Blind Spot Temporarily Unavailable, Sensor Blocked," the sensors are blocked and BSM and RCP alerts will not occur (see below).
From the 2026 Ram 1500 Owner's Manual (Blind Spot Monitoring (BSM), page 244; Blind Spot Modes, page 246), read November 4, 2026.
Which vehicles it alerts on
The manual example says BSM watches the zone from three entry points:
Entering from the side
Vehicles that move into your adjacent lanes from either side of the vehicle.
Entering from the rear
Vehicles that come up from behind on either side with a relative speed of less than 33 mph (54 km/h). Faster vehicles get an earlier alert based on relative speed.
Overtaking traffic
If you pass another vehicle slowly, with a relative speed of less than 13 mph (24 km/h), the light comes on. If the speed difference is greater than 13 mph, it does not.
From the 2026 Ram 1500 Owner's Manual (Blind Spot Monitoring (BSM), pages 244 and 245), read November 4, 2026.
What blind spot monitoring will not detect
The manual example warns that BSM is only an aid to help detect objects in the blind spot zones and is not designed to detect pedestrians, bicyclists or animals. It does not alert you about rapidly approaching vehicles that are outside the detection zones, and it will not alert you of objects traveling in the opposite direction in adjacent lanes.
BSM is designed not to alert on stationary objects such as guardrails, posts, walls, foliage and berms, but it occasionally may; the manual calls this normal operation that does not require service. The mirror lights may also blink on and off when a motorcycle or any small object stays at the side of the vehicle for more than a couple of seconds.

The "Sensor Blocked" message
In the manual example, BSM can become blocked if snow, ice, mud or other road contaminants build up on the rear fascia/bumper where the radar sensors are. It may also detect blockage in areas with extremely low radar returns, such as a desert or driving parallel to a large elevation drop.
When blockage is detected, "Blind Spot Temporarily Unavailable, Sensor Blocked" displays in the cluster, both mirror lights illuminate, and BSM and RCP alerts will not occur. The manual calls this normal operation: the system recovers on its own when the condition clears or when a key cycle occurs. To reduce blockage, do not cover the sensor area of the rear bumper with foreign objects such as bumper stickers or bicycle racks, and keep it clear of road contaminants.

Rear cross traffic alert (Rear Cross Path)
In the manual example, Rear Cross Path (RCP) is intended to help when backing out of parking spaces where your view of oncoming vehicles may be blocked. Back out slowly and cautiously until the rear of the vehicle is exposed; RCP then has a clear view of the cross traffic and alerts you if an oncoming vehicle is detected.
RCP monitors the rear detection zones on both sides for objects moving toward the side of the vehicle at a minimum of about 5 mph (8 km/h) and a maximum of about 20 mph (32 km/h), as in parking lots. When RCP is on and the vehicle is in REVERSE, it alerts with both visual and audible alarms, including reducing the radio volume. If the sensors are blocked by other structures or vehicles, it cannot alert you.
The manual warns that RCP is not a backup aid system. Always check carefully behind your vehicle, look behind you, and check for pedestrians, animals, other vehicles, obstructions and blind spots before backing up.

Blind spot settings
The manual example lists three modes, selected in the Uconnect system:
Blind Spot Alert Lights Only
A visual alert in the side view mirror on the side of a detected object. In RCP mode, the system gives both visual and audible alerts.
Blind Spot Alert Lights/Chime
A visual alert in the mirror, plus a chime if you turn on the signal toward an alert on that side. The radio, if on, is muted during the chime.
Blind Spot Alert Off
No visual or audible alerts from BSM, RCP or Trailer Merge Assist.
The system stores the current mode when the vehicle is shut off and recalls it at the next start. From the 2026 Ram 1500 Owner's Manual (Blind Spot Modes, page 246), read November 4, 2026.
Blind spot monitoring with a trailer
The manual example lists Trailer Merge Assist, an If Equipped function of BSM that extends the blind spot zone to work while pulling a trailer. Its Trailer Merge Warning covers the length of the trailer, plus a safety margin, and warns with the mirror light, a chime and reduced radio volume when a vehicle is in the adjacent lane. It supports trailers up to 39.5 ft (12 m) long and 8.5 ft (2.59 m) wide; fifth wheel and gooseneck trailers are not supported. When Trailer Merge Assist is activated, Rear Cross Path is disabled.

Blind spot monitoring FAQ
How does blind spot monitoring work?
In the 2026 Ram 1500 owner's manual example, two radar sensors inside the rear bumper watch a zone about one lane wide on each side, from near the B-pillar to about 10 ft past the rear bumper, at 7 mph or higher, and light a warning in the outside mirror when a vehicle is in the zone.
Why does my blind spot light come on with nothing there?
The manual example says BSM is designed not to alert on stationary objects such as guardrails, posts or walls, but occasionally may, and calls this normal operation. The lights may also blink when a motorcycle or small object stays beside the vehicle for more than a couple of seconds.
What does Blind Spot Temporarily Unavailable, Sensor Blocked mean?
In the manual example, snow, ice, mud or other contaminants on the rear bumper over the radar sensors, or areas with very low radar returns, can block the system. Both mirror lights come on and BSM and RCP alerts stop until the condition clears or a key cycle occurs.
Does blind spot monitoring detect bicycles or pedestrians?
No. The manual example says the BSM system is not designed to detect pedestrians, bicyclists or animals. Always check your mirrors, glance over your shoulder and use your turn signal before changing lanes.
What is rear cross traffic alert?
It warns you of vehicles crossing behind you as you back out. In the manual example it is called Rear Cross Path (RCP) and watches for objects moving toward the side of the vehicle at about 5 to 20 mph, with visual and audible alerts in REVERSE. It is not a backup aid system.
Can I turn off the blind spot chime?
In the manual example, you can choose Blind Spot Alert Lights Only, Lights/Chime, or Off in the Uconnect system. Off turns off alerts from BSM, RCP and Trailer Merge Assist.
