Airbag Light On: What It Means and What to Do
The airbag light is the air bag system's self-check. In the owner's manual example used here, the 2026 Ram 1500, it comes on for a few seconds at start-up and then goes out. If it stays on, comes on while you drive, or never comes on at all, the air bags may not be ready to protect you in a collision. Here is what the light means and what to do.

The short answer
In the manual example, the Occupant Restraint Controller (ORC) checks the air bag system each time the vehicle is switched on and lights the Air Bag Warning Light for a few seconds as a self-check. If the light does not come on at start-up, stays on after that, or comes on while driving, the manual says to have an authorized dealer service the air bag system immediately. It warns that ignoring the light could mean you will not have the air bag system to protect you in a collision. Your own vehicle's owner's manual explains its version of the light.
What the airbag light means
In the manual example, the Air Bag Warning Light is one of the red warning lights. The Occupant Restraint Controller (ORC) monitors the readiness of the electronic parts of the air bag system whenever the vehicle is in the START or ON/RUN position, and it turns the light on for approximately two to eight seconds as a self-check when the vehicle is first switched to ON/RUN. After the self-check the light turns off.
If the ORC detects a malfunction in any part of the system, it turns the light on, either momentarily or continuously, and a single chime sounds if the light comes on again after the initial start-up. The ORC's diagnostics also record the nature of the malfunction. The manual's warning-light section adds that when a fault is detected, the light stays on until the fault is cleared.
From the 2026 Ram 1500 Owner's Manual (symbol glossary, page 11; Air Bag Warning Light, page 51; Air Bag Warning Light, page 140), read November 3, 2026. Lights vary by vehicle; check your own owner's manual.
When to have the airbag light checked
The manual example says that while the air bag system is designed to be maintenance free, an authorized dealer should service it immediately if any of these happens:
No light at start-up
The Air Bag Warning Light does not come on during the two to eight seconds when the vehicle is first switched to ON/RUN.
Light stays on
The light remains on after the two to eight-second self-check.
Light while driving
The light comes on intermittently or remains on while driving.
Gauges not working
If the speedometer, tachometer or engine-related gauges are not working, the manual says the ORC may also be disabled, and the air bags may not be ready to inflate.
From the 2026 Ram 1500 Owner's Manual (Air Bag Warning Light, page 51; Driver And Passenger Front Air Bag Features warning, page 52), read November 3, 2026.
What the air bag system checks
The light can point to any part of the system the ORC watches. In the manual example, the ORC monitors the internal circuits and wiring of the electrical air bag system components, which may include:
- the Occupant Restraint Controller (ORC) and the Air Bag Warning Light
- the steering wheel and column, instrument panel and knee impact bolsters
- the driver and front passenger air bags and the supplemental side air bags
- the seat belt buckle switch, seat belt pretensioners and seat track position sensors
- the front and side impact sensors and the Occupant Classification System
The manual example also has a Redundant Air Bag Warning Light: if a fault with the Air Bag Warning Light itself is detected, the redundant light comes on with a single chime and stays on until the fault is cleared. If it comes on intermittently or remains on while driving, have the vehicle serviced immediately.
From the 2026 Ram 1500 Owner's Manual (Air Bag System Components, pages 51 and 58; Redundant Air Bag Warning Light, page 52), read November 3, 2026.
The front passenger seat and the airbag light
In the manual example, the front passenger seat has an Occupant Classification System (OCS) that sets the passenger front air bag's output based on the occupant's seated weight. The Air Bag Warning Light turns on whenever the OCS is unable to classify the front passenger seat status, and a malfunction in the OCS may affect the operation of the air bag system.
The manual asks passengers to sit upright and properly wear the seat belt, not to carry or hold objects such as backpacks or boxes while seated there, and not to place objects on the floor under the front passenger seat. It also says not to modify the seat, or to add a secondary seat cover or mat, and to use only the correct seat cover and cushion. If the light does not come on, stays on after start-up or comes on as you drive, take the vehicle to an authorized dealer for service immediately.
From the 2026 Ram 1500 Owner's Manual (Occupant Classification System, pages 53 to 56), read November 3, 2026.
Airbag light after a collision
If the air bags have deployed, the manual example says not to drive the vehicle: if you are involved in another collision, the air bags will not be in place to protect you. Deployed air bags and seat belt pretensioners cannot protect you in another collision, so it says to have the air bags, seat belt pretensioners and seat belt retractor assemblies replaced by an authorized dealer immediately, and the Occupant Restraint Controller System serviced as well.
The manual also says that after any collision the vehicle should be taken to an authorized dealer immediately, and that front and side air bags will not deploy in all collisions; that alone does not mean something is wrong with the system.
From the 2026 Ram 1500 Owner's Manual (If A Deployment Occurs, pages 58 and 59), read November 3, 2026.
Why not to work on the air bag system yourself
The manual example is direct: it is dangerous to try to repair any part of the air bag system yourself, and you should tell anyone who works on your vehicle that it has an air bag system. Its other warnings:
- Do not modify the air bag components or wiring, including adding badges or stickers to the steering wheel hub trim cover or the upper passenger side of the instrument panel.
- Do not modify the front fascia or bumper or the vehicle body structure, or add aftermarket side steps or running boards.
- Do not put anything on or around the air bag covers or try to open them.
- If a seat, its trim cover or cushion needs service in any way, including loosening or tightening the seat bolts, take the vehicle to an authorized dealer.

Airbag light FAQ
What does it mean when the airbag light stays on?
In the 2026 Ram 1500 owner's manual, a light that stays on after the start-up self-check means the system has detected a fault. The manual says to have an authorized dealer service the air bag system immediately.
Is it safe to drive with the airbag light on?
The manual warns that ignoring the Air Bag Warning Light could mean you will not have the air bag system to protect you in a collision, and says to have it serviced immediately.
Why does the airbag light come on and go off?
The manual says the Occupant Restraint Controller turns the light on, either momentarily or continuously, when it detects a malfunction. A light that comes on intermittently while driving is one of the reasons it lists for immediate service.
Can a passenger or an object on the seat turn on the airbag light?
In the manual example, the light turns on whenever the Occupant Classification System cannot classify the front passenger seat status. The manual asks passengers to sit properly, and says not to hold objects while sitting in the front passenger seat or place objects on the floor under it.
Should the airbag light come on when I start the car?
Yes, briefly. In the manual example it comes on for about two to eight seconds as a self-check. If it does not come on at all, have the system serviced.
Can I reset the airbag light myself?
The manual says it is dangerous to try to repair any part of the air bag system yourself. In its warning-light section, the light stays on until the fault is cleared.
