Washer Fluid Light: What It Means and What to Do
The washer fluid light is one of the easier dashboard lights to deal with: it usually means the windshield washer reservoir is running low. In the owner's manual example used here, the 2026 Ram 1500, the Low Washer Fluid Warning Light comes on when the windshield washer fluid is low. Here is what to add, where it goes and how to keep it from freezing.

The short answer
In the manual example, the Low Washer Fluid Warning Light will illuminate when the windshield washer fluid is low. The fix is to refill the washer fluid reservoir under the hood with windshield washer solvent only (not radiator antifreeze), choosing a solution rated for the temperatures you drive in. Your own owner's manual shows where the reservoir is on your vehicle.
What the washer fluid light means
In the manual example, the Low Washer Fluid Warning Light will illuminate when the windshield washer fluid is low. It is a reminder to top up the reservoir that feeds the windshield washers.

Where to add washer fluid
In the manual example, the washer fluid reservoir is located under the hood, and the manual says the fluid level should be checked at regular intervals. The engine compartment illustration for the 3.0L engine (standard output) labels the Washer Fluid Reservoir Cap among the caps under the hood.
Other vehicles put the reservoir in different spots, so check your own owner's manual for its location.

Which washer fluid to use
What the manual example says about filling the reservoir:
Washer solvent only
Fill the reservoir with windshield washer solvent only, not radiator antifreeze.
Clean the blades while you are there
When refilling, take some washer fluid, apply it to a cloth or towel and wipe the wiper blades clean. The manual says this will help blade performance.
Mixed as directed
Windshield washer solution used with water as directed on the container aids cleaning action, reduces the freezing point to avoid line clogging, and is not harmful to paint or trim.
Handle it with care
The manual warns that commercially available windshield washer solvents are flammable. They could ignite and burn you, so care must be exercised when filling or working around the washer solution.

Washer fluid in an Elgin winter
To prevent freeze-up of the windshield washer system in cold weather, the manual example says to select a solution or mixture that meets or exceeds the temperature range of your climate. It notes that this rating information can be found on most washer fluid containers.
It also suggests that, after the engine has warmed up, you operate the defroster for a few minutes to reduce the possibility of smearing or freezing the fluid on the cold windshield.

If the washer fluid light stays on after a refill
The manual example describes the light only as a low-fluid warning, so a refill is the first step. If the light stays on with a full reservoir, or the washers do not spray when you push the washer knob, we suggest having the washer system looked at. Tell us whether the light came back after filling and whether any fluid sprays at all.
