Signs of a Bad Alternator

The alternator (carmakers' service documents also call it the generator) is part of your vehicle's charging system. When it fails, the symptoms tend to show up as charging and electrical problems. Here are the signs listed in manufacturer service bulletins and owner's manuals, and what to do about them.

The short answer

Common signs of a failing alternator listed in manufacturer service bulletins include the battery warning light coming on, a discharged battery or a no-start, loss of electrical power, "low voltage" trouble codes in control modules, noise from the front of the engine area, and a damaged or missing accessory drive belt. In the 2026 Ram 1500 manual, the battery charge warning light means the battery is not charging properly, so have the charging system tested rather than simply replacing the battery.

What the alternator does

The alternator is the generator in your vehicle's charging system: Nissan's service bulletin NTB22-096A refers to it as the "generator (alternator)" and lists it under the charging system. The 2026 Ram 1500 Owner's Manual says its Battery Charge Warning Light illuminates when the battery is not charging properly, and that if the light stays on while the engine is running, there may be a malfunction with the charging system.

Because the charging system keeps the battery charged while you drive, a charging problem usually shows up as a warning light or as a battery that keeps running down.

From Nissan service bulletin NTB22-096A (April 19, 2024) and the 2026 Ram 1500 Owner's Manual (publication 104308_26_DT, edition E2; Battery Charge Warning Light, page 141), read November 4, 2026.

Signs of a bad alternator listed by carmakers

Carmakers publish technical service bulletins (TSBs) for technicians. These two, filed with NHTSA, list these symptoms for an alternator (generator) concern on the vehicles they cover:

Battery light on

Both bulletins list it: Nissan says the battery light is ON; Volkswagen lists the battery indicator illuminated in the instrument cluster.

Discharged battery or no start

Volkswagen bulletin 27 19 02 lists a discharged battery and a no start among the possible symptoms.

Loss of electrical power

Nissan bulletin NTB22-096A lists loss of electrical power.

Noise from the engine area

Nissan lists a loud noise from the front of the vehicle or engine area while running, and asks the technician to confirm that the noise is coming from the alternator. Volkswagen lists engine noise.

Drive belt damaged or missing

Volkswagen lists an accessory drive belt that is damaged or missing. The Nissan repair replaced the alternator together with its drive belt and the drive belt auto tensioner.

Low voltage trouble codes

Volkswagen lists "Low Voltage" diagnostic trouble codes stored in various control modules, which a technician reads with a scan tool.

From Nissan service bulletin NTB22-096A (2020-2023 Sentra built on or before January 23, 2023; April 19, 2024) and Volkswagen technical bulletin 27 19 02 (2012-2019 models, with listed exceptions; March 18, 2019), as filed with NHTSA, read November 4, 2026. Each bulletin applies only to the vehicles listed in it, and both are written for trained technicians.

What the battery or charging light means

In the 2026 Ram 1500 Owner's Manual, the Battery Charge Warning Light illuminates when the battery is not charging properly. If it stays on while the engine is running, there may be a malfunction with the charging system, and the manual says to contact an authorized dealer as soon as possible. It adds that this indicates a possible problem with the electrical system or a related component.

The 2026 Toyota Corolla Owner's Manual calls its version the charging system warning light, which indicates a malfunction in the vehicle's charging system; for that light the manual says to immediately stop the vehicle in a safe place and contact your Toyota dealer. The same manual lists the message "Charging System Malfunction" among those that may indicate a malfunction, and says to immediately stop the vehicle and contact your dealer. See also our guide to the check engine light.

From the 2026 Ram 1500 Owner's Manual (Battery Charge Warning Light, page 141) and the 2026 Toyota Corolla Owner's Manual (publication OM12W27U; charging system warning light, page 349; warning messages, page 362), read November 4, 2026. Lights and messages differ by vehicle, so follow your own owner's manual.

Is it the battery or the alternator?

A dead battery and a failing alternator can look alike, because a charging fault leaves the battery to run down. The 2026 Ram 1500 Owner's Manual gives two clues:

  • If frequent jump starting is required to start your vehicle, the manual says you should have the battery and charging system inspected at an authorized dealer.
  • On vehicles with an Intelligent Battery Sensor, a "Battery Saver On" message means the system is reducing or switching off nonessential electrical loads. The manual says this happens when the sensor detects charging system failure or the battery's condition is deteriorating, and that a loss of battery charge can also come from electrical loads larger than the charging system can supply, in which case the charging system is still functioning properly.

The 2026 Toyota Corolla Owner's Manual similarly says that if its "High Power Consumption" climate message appears frequently, there is a possible malfunction relating to the charging system or the battery may be deteriorating. In short, the symptoms overlap, which is why the charging system is tested. If you do need a jump in the meantime, see how to jump start a car.

From the 2026 Ram 1500 Owner's Manual (Battery Saver, page 139; jump starting, pages 296 and 298) and the 2026 Toyota Corolla Owner's Manual (page 362), read November 4, 2026.

How a technician confirms a bad alternator

Volkswagen's bulletin is clear that symptoms alone are not enough: if charging system diagnosis points to the generator as the suspected cause, the failure has to be verified with the applicable Guided Fault Finding test plan, and the generator is only replaced if that test plan fails for the component. Failures a scan tool cannot catch, such as a bearing failure, have to be documented in detail instead.

Nissan's bulletin also has the technician confirm that a noise, if heard, is coming from the alternator before replacing the alternator, the drive belt and the drive belt auto tensioner.

Bad alternator FAQ

What are the signs of a bad alternator?

Manufacturer service bulletins list the battery light coming on, a discharged battery or no start, loss of electrical power, low voltage trouble codes, noise from the front of the engine area, and a damaged or missing accessory drive belt.

Does the battery light mean the alternator is bad?

Not necessarily. The 2026 Ram 1500 manual says the light means the battery is not charging properly and there may be a malfunction with the charging system, so the charging system should be checked. The alternator is one part of that system.

Can a bad alternator cause a no start?

Yes. A Volkswagen service bulletin lists a discharged battery and a no start among the possible symptoms of a failed generator (alternator).

Can I keep driving with the battery light on?

Follow your owner's manual. The 2026 Toyota Corolla manual says to immediately stop in a safe place and contact your dealer when its charging system warning light comes on, while the 2026 Ram 1500 manual says to contact an authorized dealer as soon as possible.

Will a new battery fix it?

Only if the battery was the problem. The 2026 Ram 1500 manual says that if frequent jump starting is required, have the battery and charging system inspected.

What are your service hours?

Monday to Friday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. We are closed Sunday.
