How to Check Tire Pressure

Checking tire pressure takes a few minutes and a tire pressure gauge. The steps below follow two 2026 owner's manuals, the 2026 Toyota Corolla Owner's Manual and the 2026 Ram 1500 Owner's Manual, used here as manufacturer examples. Your own vehicle's manual and tire placard give the numbers that apply to it.

The short answer

Find the recommended cold tire pressure on the tire and loading information placard (on many vehicles, on the driver's side door pillar or door edge). Check the tires cold, after the vehicle has been parked for at least 3 hours. Remove the valve cap, press the tire pressure gauge onto the valve, read it, add or release air until you reach the placard pressure, then put the cap back on. The Ram manual says to check at least once a month, and the Corolla manual says every two weeks or at least once a month, including the spare.

Step 1: Find the right pressure for your vehicle

The pressure to use is the vehicle maker's recommended cold tire inflation pressure, printed on the tire and loading information placard. The 2026 Ram 1500 Owner's Manual says it is listed on the driver's side B-pillar (the post behind the front door) or the rear edge of the driver's side door, and that the placard gives the cold pressures for the front, rear and spare tires. The 2026 Toyota Corolla Owner's Manual says the recommended cold tire inflation pressure and tire size are displayed on its tire and loading information label.

The number molded into the tire sidewall is different: it is the tire's maximum inflation pressure. The Ram manual says the cold inflation pressure must not exceed that maximum.

From the 2026 Ram 1500 Owner's Manual (publication 104308_26_DT, edition E2; Tire Terminology And Definitions, Tire Loading And Tire Pressure and Tire Inflation Pressures, pages 349 to 353) and the 2026 Toyota Corolla Owner's Manual (publication OM12W27U; Tire inflation pressure, page 320), read November 4, 2026.

Front and rear pressures can differ

As an example, the 2026 Toyota Corolla Owner's Manual lists different front and rear pressures, and a much higher pressure for the compact spare:

Corolla tire sizeFrontRearCompact spare
195/65R15 (Type A)33 psi (230 kPa)30 psi (210 kPa)60 psi (420 kPa)
205/55R16 (Type B)35 psi (240 kPa)33 psi (230 kPa)60 psi (420 kPa)
225/40R18 (Type C)33 psi (230 kPa)30 psi (210 kPa)60 psi (420 kPa)

From the 2026 Toyota Corolla Owner's Manual (Specifications, Tires and wheels, page 389), read November 4, 2026. These are Corolla figures only; use the placard on your own vehicle.

Step 2: Check when the tires are cold

Placard pressures are cold pressures. Both manuals define a cold reading in nearly the same way: the Ram manual says the vehicle has not been driven for at least three hours, or has been driven less than 1 mile (1.6 km) after sitting for a minimum of three hours, and the Corolla manual says the vehicle has been parked for at least 3 hours or has not been driven more than 1 mile (1.5 km).

So the best time to check is first thing in the morning or before you drive anywhere, not right after a highway trip.

From the 2026 Ram 1500 Owner's Manual (pages 349 and 353 to 354) and the 2026 Toyota Corolla Owner's Manual (page 321), read November 4, 2026.

Step 3: Check and adjust, step by step

The 2026 Toyota Corolla Owner's Manual gives this procedure for a tire pressure gauge:

1. Remove the valve cap

Remove the cap from the tire valve.

2. Press the gauge onto the valve

Press the tip of the tire pressure gauge onto the tire valve.

3. Read the pressure

Read the pressure using the gauge gradations.

4. Adjust

If the pressure is not at the recommended level, adjust it. If you add too much air, press the center of the valve to let some out.

5. Check the valve for leaks

After measuring and adjusting, the manual says to apply soapy water to the valve and check for leakage.

6. Put the cap back on

Both manuals say to reinstall the valve cap, because dirt or moisture getting into the valve can cause a leak or damage it.

From the 2026 Toyota Corolla Owner's Manual (Inspection and adjustment procedure, pages 320 to 321) and the 2026 Ram 1500 Owner's Manual (page 353), read November 4, 2026. The Ram manual says to use a good quality pocket-type pressure gauge and not to judge inflation by eye, because tires may look properly inflated even when they are underinflated.

How often to check tire pressure

The 2026 Ram 1500 Owner's Manual says to check the inflation pressure of each tire, including the spare tire (if equipped), at least monthly, and to inspect the tires for wear or visible damage at the same time. The 2026 Toyota Corolla Owner's Manual says to check tire inflation pressure every two weeks, or at least once a month, and not to forget the spare. The Corolla manual also says that if a tire needs frequent inflating, you should have it checked.

The Ram manual adds that you should check more often if your vehicle sees a wide range of outdoor temperatures, which is exactly what an Illinois fall and winter bring. For a full cold-weather checklist, see how to winterize your car.

From the 2026 Ram 1500 Owner's Manual (pages 350 and 353) and the 2026 Toyota Corolla Owner's Manual (page 320), read November 4, 2026.

Temperature, garages and pressure after driving

Tire pressure changes with temperature. The 2026 Ram 1500 Owner's Manual says pressures change by approximately 1 psi (7 kPa) for every 12°F of air temperature change, and gives a garage example: if the garage is 68°F and it is 32°F outside, increase the cold inflation pressure by 3 psi when you set it inside the garage.

Pressure also rises as you drive. The Ram manual says it may increase 2 to 6 psi during operation and that you should not reduce this normal build-up, or the pressure will be too low once the tires cool. The Corolla manual says the same thing: it is normal for pressure to be higher after driving, so do not let air out after driving.

From the 2026 Ram 1500 Owner's Manual (Tire Inflation Pressures, pages 353 to 354) and the 2026 Toyota Corolla Owner's Manual (page 321), read November 4, 2026.

Why correct tire pressure matters

The 2026 Ram 1500 Owner's Manual lists four areas affected by improper tire pressure: safety, fuel economy, tread wear, and ride comfort and vehicle stability. It warns that underinflation increases tire flexing and can result in overheating and tire failure, that overinflation reduces a tire's ability to cushion shock, and that unequal pressures from side to side can make the vehicle drift left or right. It also says underinflated tires increase rolling resistance, resulting in higher fuel consumption.

The 2026 Toyota Corolla Owner's Manual lists reduced fuel economy, reduced driving comfort and poor handling, reduced tire life due to wear, reduced safety and damage to the drive train as possible results of driving with incorrect pressure. For tread checks, see our tire tread depth guide.

From the 2026 Ram 1500 Owner's Manual (Tires, General Information, pages 351 to 352) and the 2026 Toyota Corolla Owner's Manual (page 320), read November 4, 2026.

Your tire pressure monitor is not a substitute for a gauge

Both example vehicles have a tire pressure monitoring system. The 2026 Ram 1500 Owner's Manual says the TPMS is not a substitute for proper tire maintenance, that it is the driver's responsibility to maintain correct pressure using an accurate tire pressure gauge, and that the TPMS should not be used as a gauge while adjusting pressure unless the vehicle has Tire Fill Alert. On Ram trucks with Tire Fill Alert, the system notifies you when the placard pressure is reached while you inflate or deflate a tire.

The 2026 Toyota Corolla Owner's Manual says its tire pressure warning system does not replace routine pressure checks, and that the pressures it displays may differ from the values measured with a tire pressure gauge. If your warning light is on, see tire pressure light: what to do.

From the 2026 Ram 1500 Owner's Manual (Tire Pressure Monitoring System and Tire Fill Alert, pages 285 to 288) and the 2026 Toyota Corolla Owner's Manual (page 311), read November 4, 2026.

Checking tire pressure FAQ

What tire pressure should I use?

Use the recommended cold tire inflation pressure on your vehicle's tire and loading information placard, not the maximum pressure molded into the tire sidewall. The 2026 Ram 1500 manual says the placard is on the driver's side B-pillar or the rear edge of the driver's door.

Should I check tire pressure hot or cold?

Cold. Both the 2026 Ram 1500 and 2026 Toyota Corolla manuals say an accurate cold reading is taken after the vehicle has been parked for at least 3 hours, or driven no more than about 1 mile after that.

How often should I check tire pressure?

At least once a month, including the spare. The 2026 Toyota Corolla manual recommends every two weeks, or at least once a month.

Why does my tire pressure drop in cold weather?

Air pressure changes with temperature. The 2026 Ram 1500 manual says tire pressure changes by about 1 psi for every 12 degrees F of temperature change.

Should I let air out after driving?

No. Both manuals say pressure normally rises while driving (the Ram manual says by 2 to 6 psi) and that you should not reduce it.

Can I use the dashboard tire pressure display instead of a gauge?

No. The 2026 Ram 1500 manual says not to use the monitoring system as a gauge while adjusting pressure unless the vehicle has Tire Fill Alert, and the 2026 Toyota Corolla manual says its warning system does not replace routine pressure checks and its displayed values may differ from a gauge reading.

What are your service hours?

Monday to Friday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. We are closed Sunday.
