Door Ajar Light: What It Means and What to Do

A door ajar light usually has a simple cause: a door that is not fully closed. In the owner's manual example used here, the 2026 Ram 1500, the Door Open Warning Light illuminates when a door is ajar or open and not fully closed, and there are separate lights for the hood and the tailgate. Here is what each one means and what to do when the light will not go out.

The short answer

In the manual example, the Door Open Warning Light illuminates when a door is ajar/open and not fully closed. If the vehicle is moving, there will also be a single chime. Open and firmly close each door, then check the hood and, on a truck, the tailgate, since the manual lists separate Hood Open and Tailgate Open warning lights.

What the door ajar light means

In the manual example, the Door Open Warning Light illuminates when a door is ajar/open and not fully closed.

The glossary also notes that warning and indicator lights are different based upon equipment options and current vehicle status, and some telltales are optional and may not appear. Other vehicles may show this light differently, so check your own owner's manual.

Door, hood and tailgate open lights

The manual example lists three separate open-warning lights:

Door Open Warning Light

Illuminates when a door is ajar/open and not fully closed.

Hood Open Warning Light

Illuminates when the hood is ajar/open and not fully closed.

Tailgate Open Warning Light

Illuminates when the tailgate is open.

From the 2026 Ram 1500 Owner's Manual (symbol glossary, page 11; Door Open and Hood Open Warning Lights, page 141; Tailgate Open Warning Light, page 142), read November 4, 2026.

Why you hear a chime

For each of the three lights, the manual example adds a note: if the vehicle is moving, there will also be a single chime. So a chime while you drive, together with one of these lights, points to a door, the hood or the tailgate that is not fully closed.

What to do when the door ajar light comes on

These steps are our suggestions, based on what the manual says the lights mean:

  1. If you are driving, pull over somewhere safe before checking anything.
  2. Open and firmly close each door, including the rear doors.
  3. Check that the hood is fully latched. Do not drive with the hood unlatched.
  4. On a pickup, check that the tailgate is closed.
  5. See whether the light goes out once everything is shut.

The steps are our suggestions. What each light means is from the 2026 Ram 1500 Owner's Manual (pages 141 and 142), read November 4, 2026.

If the door ajar light stays on with every door shut

The manual example describes the light only as a sign that a door is ajar/open and not fully closed. If the light stays on after every door, the hood and the tailgate are firmly closed, we suggest having it looked at. Tell us which light is on, whether it comes and goes, and whether you hear the chime while driving.

The service suggestion is ours. The light description is from the 2026 Ram 1500 Owner's Manual (page 141), read November 4, 2026.
