What Is GAP Insurance?
When you finance a car, you may be offered GAP insurance along with the loan. GAP stands for Guaranteed Asset Protection. Here is what it covers, when it can matter, and what the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) says to check before you decide.

The short answer
GAP insurance is an optional product intended to cover the difference between what you owe on your auto loan and what your insurance company pays if your car is stolen or totaled. Standard auto insurance only pays up to the value of the vehicle, so GAP matters when your loan balance is higher than the car is worth. The CFPB says you generally cannot be required to buy it, that its price can vary greatly, and that you should compare prices and coverage before you buy.
What GAP insurance covers
The CFPB describes GAP as an optional product that is intended to cover the difference between the amount you owe on your auto loan and the amount the insurance company pays if your car is stolen or totaled.
The reason it exists: standard auto insurance only pays an amount up to the value of your vehicle. GAP is supposed to cover the loss you would suffer if your loan balance is higher than the value of the vehicle. In the CFPB's words, it covers the difference (or gap) between the amount you owe and what your insurance pays if your vehicle is stolen, damaged or totaled.

When GAP can matter, and when it may not
Whether GAP would pay anything comes down to two numbers if the car is stolen or totaled: what you owe on the loan and what your insurance pays for the car.
| If your loan balance is | What standard insurance does | What GAP is meant to do |
|---|---|---|
| Higher than the car's value | Pays an amount up to the value of the vehicle, leaving a balance still owed on the loan. | Cover that difference between the loan balance and the insurance payment. |
| Lower than the car's value | Pays an amount up to the value of the vehicle; if that payment covers what you owe, nothing is left over. | There is no gap to cover. The CFPB notes that, depending on your circumstances, products like GAP may not provide value. |

The CFPB notes these products often have eligibility restrictions, so read what a policy covers before you buy it.
Is GAP insurance required to get a car loan?
Generally, no. The CFPB says you generally cannot be required to buy an extended warranty, GAP insurance or credit insurance, and that in most situations they are optional. You have the right to walk away and look for a different dealer or lender if you are being pressured to purchase optional products.
If a dealer or lender says you must buy GAP to qualify for financing, the CFPB says to ask where the sales contract says that, or contact the lender yourself to find out if it is true. If it is true, the cost of the GAP insurance must be included in the finance charge and reflected in the disclosed annual percentage rate (APR). If it is optional, you can decline it. If the contract does not explicitly state that it is required, you cannot be required to purchase it.
Before you sign the loan papers, the CFPB suggests asking the lender whether the loan includes charges for optional products.

What to check before you buy GAP
The CFPB lists GAP as one of several optional add-on products, along with extended warranties and credit insurance, that a dealer will likely offer when you buy or lease a car. Its guidance boils down to a few checks:
- Compare where you can get it. The price can vary greatly. Your own auto insurance company may offer a GAP policy, and some direct lenders also offer it. Compare prices and coverage before you buy.
- Know what financing it costs. When GAP is bought at the dealer, its cost will be rolled into the loan amount. Financing it adds to your total loan amount, which increases what you pay in total interest over time.
- Check eligibility and value. These products often have eligibility restrictions, and depending on your circumstances may not provide value.
- Read the contract. Ask where any requirement is written, and decline the product if it is optional and you do not want it.

Refunds and canceling GAP
The CFPB says you have the right to cancel these optional add-on products at any time and reduce your costs; if you added one to your loan, you have the right to cancel it during the term of the loan, which can save you money.
You may also be entitled to a refund if you sell, refinance or prepay your auto loan. If you do not have your paperwork, the CFPB suggests checking with your lender, the provider or the dealer you bought the car from.

GAP compared with other add-ons you may be offered
| Product | What it is meant to do |
|---|---|
| GAP insurance | Covers the difference between what you owe on your auto loan and what your insurance pays if the vehicle is stolen, damaged or totaled. |
| Extended warranty or service contract | Pays the costs of some repairs, above what the manufacturer's warranty covers or after it ends. |
| Credit insurance | Makes payments to your lender if you die, lose your job or become disabled. Types include credit life, credit disability, involuntary unemployment and credit property insurance. |
| Debt cancellation or suspension | Cancellation eliminates the loan if you die, or cancels the monthly payment for a specified hardship; suspension postpones payments that you still make up later. The CFPB notes these are not regulated by state insurance officials. |
